I'm trying to install a HP Laser MFP 137 fnw. The printer is a network one and works OK with all the windows PCs on the network. First i tried to add a network printer but it is not visible. When I run hp-setup I get

Give what you get for

Code: Select all

avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp

Code: Select all

avahi-browse -rt _uscan._tcp

Code: Select all

driverless
When I go to the link it's a page a cannot be found.
It is only about three years since HP's website was revamped. Give HPLIP a chance to catch up :).

Failed to resolve service ...
You have a network problem, not a printing problem. Can you ping the printer?

I got the printer's IP from windows and pinged it.

Code: Select all

david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ ping 192.168.0.115
PING 192.168.0.115 (192.168.0.115) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.0.115: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.230 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.115: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.246 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.115: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.290 ms
Looking at the ipconfig in windows I spotted that my VPN (Nordvpn) might be an issue. I turned it off and it printed first time. Now just to figure out how to get the scanner to work.

After that a work around so that i don't have to turn off vpn every time I need to print.

Thanks Brian

Maybe this print queue will get over the VPN issue:

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p PRINTQ -v ipp://192.168.0.115/ipp/print -E -m everywhere
Test with

Code: Select all

lp -d PRINTQ /etc/nsswitch.conf
PRINTQ can be any name you choose, such as laser137. This is not a workaround but a modern, non-HPLIP tecnique.

In normal circumstances I would recommend

Code: Select all

apt install sane-airscan
for scanning. Your device is supported.

The first ran ok and I can now scan albeit with the VPN turned off.

The other two gave

Code: Select all

david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ lpadmin -p PRINTQ -v ipp://192.168.0.115/ipp/print -E -m everywhere
lpadmin: Unable to connect to "192.168.0.115:631": Operation now in progress
david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ lp -d PRINTQ /etc/nsswitch.conf
lp: No such file or directory
Next stop is to scour NORDVPN support.

So, getting there dripping slowly.

From the Nordvpn support I can whitelist ports and subnets.

Code: Select all

nordvpn whitelist add port 515
I used this to add 515 and 9100 as these seem to be the two main ports used for printers but with no success.

Code: Select all

nordvpn whitelist add subnet 192.168.0.0/16
I tried to use this but the address of the printer is ipp://192.168.0.115/ipp/print and when i use this I get

Code: Select all

david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ nordvpn whitelist add subnet --help
nordvpn whitelist add subnet
Usage: nordvpn whitelist add subnet [address]

Use this command to whitelist subnet.

Example: 'nordvpn whitelist add subnet 192.168.1.1/24'

Notes:
Address should be in CIDR notation

david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ nordvpn set technology Openvpn
Technology is already set to 'OpenVPN'.
david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ nordvpn whitelist add subnet 192.168.0.115
The command you entered is not valid. Enter 'nordvpn whitelist add subnet --help' to see the options.
david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ nordvpn whitelist add subnet ipp://192.168.0.115/ipp/print
The command you entered is not valid. Enter 'nordvpn whitelist add subnet --help' to see the options.
david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ nordvpn whitelist add subnet 192.168.0.115/ipp/print
The command you entered is not valid. Enter 'nordvpn whitelist add subnet --help' to see the options.
david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ nordvpn whitelist add subnet 192.168.0.115/ipp
The command you entered is not valid. Enter 'nordvpn whitelist add subnet --help' to see the options.
For now my settings in Nordvpn are

Code: Select all

david@david-Aspire-XC-704:~$ nordvpn settings
Technology: OpenVPN
Protocol: UDP
Firewall: enabled
Kill Switch: disabled
CyberSec: disabled
Obfuscate: disabled
Notify: enabled
Auto-connect: enabled
DNS: disabled
Whitelisted ports:
          515 (UDP|TCP)
         9100 (UDP|TCP)
Would any of these need to be changed?

Damm, I might have just found the issue. From this https://support.nord-help.com/Connectiv ... outers.htm in NordVPN support. They don't support TP-Link routers and I'm using a TP Link TL-SG105 switch to connect both PCs and the printer to my router.

Bugger that! :x
