slow printing on HP deskjet 3520

hi everyone
after years of proper working with linux mint 17, 18 and 19, when I switched to Mint 20 my HP deskjet 3520 became very very very slow...

text-only pages are ok, but any other type (even text but with borders, or frames, pictures, graphs, drawings) shows this behaviour:

• the file is sent almost immediately to the printer
• the printer feeds the paper sheet
• at this point, the printer process the first "row", then stops for a minute or so
• then moves to the second line, stops again
• and so on

... a full page needs almost 20 minutes

I tried to remove the printer and to make a new setup, removed cups and reinstalled, I tried both with the system printer management console and the hplip gui... no matter what, the behaviour is the same

If I boot the system in the old mint19, averything works fine


do you have any idea about how to troubleshoot this issue?

("Yes") A downloadable driver plug-in is Yes for printing support. ("Optional") A downloadable driver plug-in is optional for printing support and may increase the speed, quality, or other aspect of printed output. ("No" or "None") A driver plug-in is not Yes nor available. Driver plug-ins are released under a proprietary (non-open) license and are not part of the HPLIP tarball release.

Some HP printers require proprietary software technologies to allow full access to printer features and performance. Unfortunately, these technologies cannot be open sourced, but to resolve this HP uses a binary plug-in for these printers.

I do not fully understand your reply.. anyway my model is listed as "fully supported", and is not listed among the ones the would require a binary plug-in


In any case, the printer works perfectly with mint 19

Sorry, I looked wrong at the HP Models list table.

If you are using Linux Mint 20 Ulyana (not 20.1 Ulyssa), you can try to remove ippusbxd package. https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedoc ... l#ippusbxd

I'm running mint 20.1 Ulyssa... and anyway that package is not installed

Thus situated, issue may be related with hplip version. If you wish; you can try to downgrade hplip version to focal repository with following command.

sudo apt install hplip/focal

If hplip version in focal repository doesn't solve the issue, you can try to upgrade hplip version from PPA repository. viewtopic.php?p=2002544#p2002544
