How to remove 'Extra' printer entry in xed?

Post by panorain »

The is an unaccounted for printer entry displayed in 'xed' but not CUPS (localhost:631). I have attached 2 screenshots to this message.
1. Remove-Printer-Entry-0.png |> xed > file > print > Brother-MFC-J485DW | This is an unaccounted/unwanted printer entry not displayed or listed in Menu > Printers -but- is displayed in xed printer options.
2. Remove-Printer-Entry-1.png |> Mozilla Firefox > localhost:631 > Printers > | Printer listings shown are correct and nothing appears incorrect.

Did you try opening Printers in the Menu under Administration and right click the unwanted ones and choose Delete?

pretty much normal,
has been that way on every LM install I have had.

The Lexmark failed to reinstall when I changed from 18.3 to 19.3, just gave up on it.

the Epson is on the network.

It is the same in Windows also.

Same laptop, just rebooted to Windows, same network.

I have tried to delete the "ghost" printers, and the results have been a crashed printer setup, or the "deleted" ones just pop back up like always.

for me, it is a topic that I just don't worry about.
the printers always work, and that is where I quit.

If they are on the network, you can do a factory reset of your modem and it will clean them. That is if you have a modem.

that is a major PITA, I prefer to just leave it alone.
too many devices on my WiFi to go messing with modem resets

Getting your opinions on this helps me feel a bit more at ease somehow. I hope there are more opinions on this following. I decided to write the post because the issue was just bothering me in the back of my mind a bit. I am sure there is a way to remove the entry out there. If I do find the answer I will try to report it here. I just cannot let it annoy me such that it has been.

How could this affect the sole incorrect entry that is being displayed in xed only....and not in CUPS? No incorrect devices are being display in 'Menu > Printers' either.

Hope to hear back.

Thank you for your follow up on this matter. I would like to add that when opening: xed > file > print ----> Brother-MFC-J485DW > Status -underneath- "Getting Printer Information".

I now think perhaps LanceM had a very good comment about performing a "factory reset" on my modem. I do have in use currently a Quest-PK5000, it is a modem/router combination unit/device. A reset could cause the ongoing connection message to in fact disappear. The way I am, I fear I will be performing this modem reset in the coming future.

Until then please feel free to comment with your thoughts on the matter.
1. Have you had success with this modem reset method in the past?
I do know that I must change from default VPI and VCI settings in order to connect with the Internet Service Provider.

CUPS is not involved in this printer display in the GTK print dialog. A little test:

Code: Select all

systemctl stop cups
Note Getting printer infor... and read

https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting#gtk

Turning AirPrint off on the printer would remove the entry. In my situation this would totally destroy my printing setup.

Yes, it happens to me from time to time. I get a second and sometimes a third apparently identical printer appearing, and it is a pain in the posterior to identify which one to delete. (The real printer has very specific settings for duplexing, scaling, etc; the fake ones have default settings which spoil my printing.)

Thank you once again brian_p for your insight and the link. I read it and wanted to point out a few things if I may.
1. Starting and stopping the CUPS process

Code: Select all

systemctl stop cups
systemctl start cups
The 'Ghost-entry' is removed from xed.
2. Powercycle the computer > login > xed > file > print > the entry is displayed again in the GTK print dialog.
3. The link you provided has a section: CUPS 2.2.4 and the GTK print Dialog > Duplicate Print Queues > 2. CUPS is not involved in producing the GTK dialog entry, so the solution awaits the efforts of GTK developers. This appears to be the case perhaps I am mistaken on this. Your thoughts please?
4. On the machine here /etc/cups/browsed.conf has some ipp configuration capability (which I am currently using here). I do not believe this is the route I should go due to the fact that CUPS is displaying the wanted printer entries perfectly.
5. As you stated earlier the xed issue is GTK related.
I would like to attach a screenshot to this message if I may. The screenshot will show the currently selected default printers Device URI entry
Currently selected default printer Device URI ipp entry.
Currently selected default printer Device URI ipp entry.
.
6. the output of

Code: Select all

lpstat -a
-and-

Code: Select all

lpstat -e
are correct with no entry of Brother-MFC-J485DW. The printers name is different though: "Ghost-entry" > Brother-MFC-J485DW. The correct entry as shown in xed (GTK) Brother_MFC_J485DW and

Code: Select all

lpstat -a
displays >

7.
Turning AirPrint off on the printer would remove the entry. In my situation this would totally destroy my printing setup.
I logged in to the printer with (in my case the following IP address) through Firefox Webrowser 192.168.1.28 > Brother-MFC-J485DW > Airprint > Status > Disabled > Submit - Powercycled....Same "Ghost-entry" displayed in xed.
8. I was not familiar as to the ability to login to the printers interface through Firefox Webrowser. This display's a whole variety of configuration settings.
Conclusion: This could very well be a GTK related issue as brian_p pointed out. I do not see how resetting my modem to default will help with this situation right now.
I would like to hear your thoughts on this once again if at all possible. I want to thank everyone for their thoughts on this. As I stated earlier this has sort of been bothering me a bit.

After stopping cups and disabling AirPrint/Bonjour, the only entry in the print dialog should be Print to File. Powercycling of anything is not needed and will restart cups.

This does not appear to be the case (at least not at this particular machine).
1. I passed the following command:

Code: Select all

systemctl stop cups
2. I opened xed > file > print > Brother-MFC-J485DW appears under Print to file.
3. I have attached a screenshot to this message.
4. Powercycling is not needed has been noted.
Once again thank you for your input on this matter. I hope to hear back with your thoughts.

An interesting issue :). We note that the entry cannot be a result of CUPS; it is not running. Where could it be coming from? I wonder what happens if wireless is turned off on the printer?

I have performed the following operations:
1. Unplugged the Brother_MFC_J485DW completely.
2. Unplugged the Quest PK5000 modem/router combo unit for 2 minutes then reconnected.
3. Passed the following command in mate terminal 1.24.0 >

Code: Select all

systemctl stop cups
4. Opened the xed editor application > menu > file > print - "Print to File" is the only entry displayed.
xed displays only "Print to File".
xed displays only "Print to File".
5. Passed the following command in mate terminal 1.24.0 >

Code: Select all

systemctl start cups
6. Opened the xed editor application 5 listings are shown. The Ghost-entry Brother-MFC-J485DW and Brother_MFC_J485DW are not listed.

8. I do wonder why entry MFCJ485DW is displayed. It is an ipp entry as shown in prior posts in this thread. I tend to use this entry to print with.
9. Plugged the power cable of the Brother-MFC-J485DW into a power outlet. Long story short......same.
10. Passed the following 2 commands:

Code: Select all

11. Opening the CUPS interface in Firefox (localhost:631) resulted in displaying neither "Brother_MFC_J485DW" -and- "Brother-MFC-J485DW" printer entries.
12. I Powercycled.....xed > file > print > same.
Same entries displayed as initial.

I certainly hope I have not confused anyone. I have tried my best to be clear and concise with the layout of the problem.

This seems clear cut to me. The GTK print dialog is getting the (unwanted) printer entry directly from the printer via DNS-SD.
