Possibly your problem is that Linux Mint 17 was abandoned a few years ago. You need to install Mint 19 or 20 to get a current version.

It is as up to date as it will ever get because Mint 17 is dead. It is not an update you need, it is a new installation of a current OS such as 19 or 20. There are theoretically ways to update from 17 to 18 to 19 but they are so fraught with difficulties that realistically a new installation is the only feasible way.

If it is of any interest, I have an ENVY 4500 :D. Should your new installation be Mint 20.1:
  • Install ipp-usb.
  • Plud printer into USB.
  • Print.
  • Install sane-airscan.
  • Scan.

Couldn't be easier!

Please forget about my advice; I was too hasty in offering it. The printer is too old to have the modern driverless facilities needed to use ipp-usb.

I made a disk for the OS listed hear

Q4OS Centaurus, Trinity, install-CD - 32bit / i386 ... 427 M Bytes ...
From what I can see I should be able to make this as a new installation.

But having made- Q40S-32 bit CD for install.
I rebooted computer, restarted and put the CD in, it placed a icon on the desk top.
But when I click the Q40s desktop icon , all I get is files. When I look for help all
help is directed too my currant OP. Mint 17

I like Linux very much. It has worked well for me and I only use it for e-mail, paying bills and looking at the news, a little You tube, and a little printing, so I don't need much. A new supported OS sounds good because its supported. Any way what do you think? I only have a printing problem, so what do you think about my replacing the printer? Again thank you. At 77 because of you I now understand why I have not gotten any up dates. Did not have a clue that my old system lacks support.

I have no idea what Centaurus, Trinity etc are, but I suspect you have copied the new OS onto a disc whereas you need to "burn" it (as it is misleadingly called) to the disc. In other words the OS needs to be made installable by the use of appropriate software. The whole process is shown here

If you wish to use their support forums, that's fine. Otherwise, we only support Mint.

Don't even think of it.

Give the output of

Code: Select all

I have installed Linux Mint 19 "Tara" - Cinnamon (32-bit) I still can not print, I get the same errors messages when I try. The computer says threes a broken pipe and the printer says its not connected to a computer. I can scan from the scanner, and then print the scan. But i can not print from the computer using the office writer. :(

Glad to read you finally have a current operating system. Now we have a chance to get the printer functional. Brian is the resident expert on the matter so I shall leave it to him to resolve, so I suggest you supply the information he asked for. Open a terminal and copy the command he gave into it. Press Enter, then copy the result into your reply.

I can not find 20.1 for 32bit to install. Do you have a link for that?

But the printer still does not work and I see that the new install has Bluetooth not working for head phones.

Says: “Visible as “peter-Think Center-ASB-A58” and available for Bluetooth file transfer”

DIVICE : “57c918ca4c43dc893c” Not Set Up

32bit less available

Post by pdc_2 »

So Peter; 32bit is on the way out ..... standard Mint I think last supported it in variant 19;

however I see the Debian Mint still supports 32bit;

this link https://itsfoss.com/32-bit-linux-distributions/

........ comments "If you’ve been keeping up with the latest Linux distributions, you must have noticed that 32-bit support has been dropped from most of the popular Linux distributions. Arch Linux, Ubuntu, Fedora, everyone has dropped the support for this older architecture."

the link does list 10 distros that still issue 32 bit variants

here you will find leaner distros: so if you want to use an older machine, surely best choose a lean distro?
