Semi-newbie here.
I’ve been using Lniux Mint for about 8 months, and never ran into any serious problems until I got my new printer : HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
I never had an issue with my previous printer, an HP Deskjet 2600 something, but with the new one it is impossible to print or scan anything reliably.
The printer will sometimes be detected, sometimes not, sometimes through USB, it will not print, or print after a 15 min waiting time, just after I restart it it sometimes works, etc.
I’ve managed to print a few pages, but it is extremely frustrating and I cannot figure out what makes it work or not.
cups
The most usual scenario is that the printer will show up in localhost, but when I sent sth to it I will get the following error message : hp status no suitable destination found by cups-browsed and the document will just stay in the queue forever.
This seems to be a reported bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1855595
I tried removing cups with the following command :
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge --autoremove cups-browsed
hplip
I tried installing hplip.3.21.4.run but ran into the following issues :
The first time the installation seemed to have gone through, but I stupidly launched it while I was away from my printer and thus could not complete the setup.
I have tried removing it and re-installing it several times since, but I always get the following error :
Code: Select all
POST-BUILD COMMANDS
-------------------
UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xaf in position 2: invalid start byte
The above exception was the direct cause of the following exception:

ppd_dict = cupsext.getPPDList()
SystemError: <built-in function getPPDList> returned a result with an error set
I tried installing it through the built-in software center, the installation completes properly but when I try to set up my printer it doesn’t detect it (be it through USB or wireless), and when it does it cannot set it up.
Another strange thing is that despite uninstalling and removing hplip several times through sudo apt-get remove hplip and sudo apt-get –purge hplip, it still shows up as « present » when I try to re-install the .run file and the small hp applet still shows up in my taskbar despite removing it through the appstore.
