[SOLVED] New issue with my HP printer Envy

Post by Menard »

Hello

When I last printed a document (text) under Libre Office Writer, it began to print the normal page but after the middle it printed some geometrical drawings using a lot of black aereas (so it wastes a lot of ink) til the end, as the page is empty in characters at this place.
So I tried another time but only changing the USB port used for the neighbour one, and it worked well
...

(black only cartridge printing)
I wonder what means this, it is frequent to see that missed printings have something to do with the USB port used
perhaps because we should never change that port once the printer has been installed ?
In the past I often succeeded by changing USB 2 port for one USB 3 port

I don't know: I would have to use a search engine to check this out

however

if you start at the MENU button;

then go to ADMINISTRATION; then PRINTERS;

if you right-click on the icon for your HP Envy; it should open on the SETTINGS tab;

what does the entry say in the "MAKE & MODEL" section please:

Which model of HP Envy do you own?

I allready know the model, it is a 4500 one

It generally gives 3 printers in the LO Write Printers Settings

- HP-Envy-4500
- HP-Envy-4500-"name of my PC"
- ENVY_4500_series_CN48K14-0S0060D_

Only this last one, works

Now i made more tests, testin all USB ports and with none of them it is recognized as an USB Device ot anything ... included on Windows XP .... (in 1st analyse so to be confirmed)

lsusb gives nothing ... confused ?

I imagine this : since the last time it was workin, my PS2 mouse died (a problem with one IR or light Receiver or IR or light bulb) and I replaced it by an USB mouse ... I think that logically it is related to this

------------------------------

In fact now I wonder if an OS as Linux can modify something in the printer and so make that the printer is even not recongnized by another totally different OS ?

FINALLY !!! It was the USB Cable that was damaged, and I had some 2 others , then now it works ...

but it appears that Hplip-gui is not able to recognize my printer, it's a shame
and I continue to see that the first printing is not correct, with sometimes an important loss of ink, because one third of the page is full of black zones

NOT ??? .....[SOLVED] New issue with my HP printer Envy

Post by pdc_2 »

so bonjour Menard; the thread is showing SOLVED but when you say

"I continue to see that the first printing is not correct, with sometimes an important loss of ink, because one third of the page is full of black zones"

...... can I assume you are not happy and want advice?

In an earlier post you listed 3 drivers and said only one worked;

"- ENVY_4500_series_CN48K14-0S0060D_

Only this last one, works"

If you go to the PRINTERS folder; and right-click on the icon for this printer (ENVY_4500_series_CN48K14-0S0060D), what does MAKE & MODEL say please?

could you also tell us what

Code: Select all

driverless
shows?

it appears that Hplip-gui is not able to recognize my printer,
can you tell us all the steps you take; that give you that conclusion
______________________________________________________________________
finalement, ......... it seems your 4500 needs only hplip 3.13 so you are well covered in Mint 20;

....... but ... it also seems that hplip is not used/needed by Mint 20; I saw that as our HP printer was set up as driverless by Mint; even though I plodded through running hplip!!

Bonjour
I don't clearly understand your conclusion
in the doubt :

/Printers
Fabriquant et modèle : HP ENVY 4500 series, driverless, cups-filters 1.27.4

$ sudo driverless
ipp://ENVY%204500%20series%20%5BCN48K140S0060D%5D._ipp._tcp.local/

I click on the HP Device Manager and Setup Device, then USB and then on Next, and finally Add Printer, but after this I get :
"You do not have the permission to add a printer You need authentification"

pdc_2 has got you to give some valuable information that should help us progress. Give the outputs of

Code: Select all

inxi -F | grep Distro

Code: Select all

dpkg -l ippusbxd

Please upgrade to Linux Mint 20.1 or Linux Mint 20.2. It will make it a lot easier for explaining what to do.

Code: Select all

$ dpkg -l ippusbxd
ii ippusbxd 1.34-2ubuntu1 amd64 Daemon for IPP USB printer support
ippusbxd is a very, very suboptimal utility that should be removed from the system. Even its author will not let it near any of his machine :) .

Code: Select all

apt purge ippusbxd
NB : I upgraded kernel from 5.8 to 5.11 this morning
It is far more important to upgrade to Mint 20.1/20.2. Come back when you have done so.

In fact I generally feel unmotivated to upgrade OS. I admit that I do not remember having seen an update solve a problem, it is a legend in computer science that, a fake news
See for example the ACPI error message we have when it starts ...

Your choice, but now I feel completely unmotivated to continue my participation in this discussion. Your previous thread (way back in March 2021_) is worth revisiting.

You upgraded your kernel. The kernel hasn't any direct bearing on printing. As you have found out! But, given a route to printing, you spurn it.

What I ve done is to try to install this printer with Hplip-gui on my administrative user account and so it seems to work, it was installed, but with an error
I didn't still try to uninstall the ipusbxd

this error

Capture d’écran du 2021-04-01 08-44-15b.jpg
but all seems to be normal, I ll try to print

So no, it failed in exactly the same process than before, so

1 - all seems normal, then
2 - the print starts and stop but the page stays inside
3 - nothing happens, no noise, no message, the print task manager stay empty but on the printer the LCD screen shows that the printing continues
4 - after some minutes it starts again and the sheet gets out but the lower part of the printing is missing with a big black line

Usually then, the following try is correct ...

By chance today I needed only the upper part of my document so I didn't lose ink and paper

conclusion : Hplip-gui brings nothing to improve USB text black and white printing issues on Linux Mint 20.0 with HP printers (about one only assay)
