xsane preview, but fails scan

New install Mint 20.1 with HP 2700 (2722) printer scanner.
The printer functions ok, and simple-scan works, xsane opens and will preview.
But xsane fail to scan with error:

(xsane:6259): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 10:45:56.408: IA__gdk_drawable_unref: assertion 'GDK_IS_DRAWABLE (drawable)' failed

I have searched and found many references to the error, but no fixes.
Any help??

For some strange reason the xsane now scans, but the error message still appears if xsane is started in a terminal.

My Pixma MG5400 series died recently, so I now have the TR8620 series. By replacing the usb cable to the router with a rj45 cable, and selecting the "automatic" setup on the printer's front panel screen, it scans and prints !
