(SOLVED) HPLIP side effects on System Settings button
I'll comment here on HP lip drivers - I installed one for my HP M254dw laser and that rendered my System Settings button inoperable. I googled and found tons of folks with that same problem. Make a backup before you do it.Don't rely on Timeshif. I did and that rendered my system unbootable. Had to re-install.

Re: HPLIP side effects on System Settings button
Okay, so, spilt off, cool - also want to note THAT, When I did a clean install of Mint 20.1 again, and checked Mint Software Mgr and searched for HPLIP, It popped up and said it was already installed! (checked) . So I was wrong to have gone to HP and tried to install it again. I also noticed that there was a HPLIP-gui, which I installed and which gives a very nice HPLIP toolbox .
HPLIP means HP Linux Imaging and Printing system.

Re: HPLIP side effects on System Settings button
I have a HP M254dw laser printer and I thought I would see if HP had a linux driver for it (not realizing there was one already present in my Mint build) so I went to HP site and downloaded hplib driver and using their instructions, installed it. After that the System Settings button would not work. Googled tons. Known issue. No known workaround.
This button: aka "System Settings Control Center" after the update, clicking on this button, either in the task bar or in the start button menu, DID NOTHING, NADA, ZERO, ZIP. I googled and found that had happened to a lot of folks after doing an hplip update that they had gotten from HP. I did not have a backup so I had to re-install.
As I said above, Mint folks don't have to go to HP to get an update as it is already included and installed and works just fine. I just didn't realize that.
Be well!!!
