The PPD for your printer is either

Code: Select all

brother-DCP1610W-cups-en.ppd
or

Code: Select all

lsb/usr/brother/brother-DCP1610W-cups-en.ppd
They should be equivalent.

From previously, the URI is

Code: Select all

usb://Brother/DCP-1610W%20series?serial=E74229M4N415924
Execute

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p dcp1610 -v "URI" -E -m PPD
after substituting for URI and PPD. Test printing with

Code: Select all

lp -d dcp1610 /etc/nsswitch.conf

I see nothing wrong with either of those commands. In particular, the first one is the most basic command for setting up a print queue. Please execute

Code: Select all

sudo cupsfilter -p /etc/cups/ppd/dcp1610.ppd -m printer/foo -e /etc/nsswitch.conf > out.dat 2>log
You can view log with

Code: Select all

less log
but, for us to see it , you will have to send its contents here.

A Brother filter is looking for something. It cannot find it. My guess would be that you maybe have not installed both the Brother printing packages. I am not prepared to debug this any further.

Brother offers a driver install tool or you can download the debs separately and install them yourself. I'm old fashioned and do it myself. Download the debs for the driver and the CUPSwrapper. Install the driver first and then the cups wrapper.

If this is what you have done, try adding a new printer and connecting wirelessly. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the network, then add printer > network printer > find network printer. See if it finds the printer. If it connects and prints wirelessly this points to a problem with the usb interface.

I gave in and installed the two packages the old-fashioned way :). Then set up a queue and ran cupsfilter as Mercuzio did. This is my log:

This is a good technique and a USB problem did pass through my mind too. However, given the difference in the two logs, my thoughts would incline to thinking in terms of a possible package installation issue. Mercuzio needs to give us what is obtained with

Your problem is not with the Mint printing system but a problem with the proprietary driver from Brother.

Given that I've never had a problem with a brother printer, I think it is time to un-install the two debs, re-install them in the correct order and try printing wirelessly.

I have to admit I have not seen any extensive issues that users have with Brother drivers. However, there is a Ghostscript error in the log. Neither of the Mint filters uses Ghostscript. Perhaps the Brother filter does? Who knows?

What you suggest is sound. I hope Mercuzio tries it.

In all matters printers I defer to you :D . Brother printers just work and I've not had to troubleshoot much (and thus learn much). Any problems I've had have been of my own making (like finding out you need to install the driver before the CUPSwrapper). If I had to buy another printer tomorrow it would be another Brother. Hence user error is the likely problem (but where?).

On the specific point of Ghostscript, changes in new versions over the last two years or so have repeatedly broken compatibility with xnview.com software, where it is used to rasterise PDF and certain other image formats, requiring changes to xnview software to restore compatibility... :?:

If that possibility is pursued, the answer might be to try downloading and installing a Ghostscript version that is several years old, although that might of course break other software in Mint.

Edit:

Not sure if this link Brother DCP-1610W FAQs & Troubleshooting could be relevant, otherwise a further online search might provide some background, if needed.

Given that I've never had a problem with a brother printer, I think it is time to un-install the two debs, re-install them in the correct order and try printing wirelessly.
Uninstalled and then reinstalled the .deb packages, but nothing changed, no printing

What you suggest is sound. I hope Mercuzio tries it.
