[SOLVED] Printer Recognised, Error- Not Connected

Post by ecoalex »

Mate 20 HP 4524 PSC cable connection , even tho the printer is shown with a blue check on it , it will not print/scan an error message says not connected. In the printer window it shows the printer is enabled .After many unplugging efforts, it may print. In the interface it shows enabled checked. Where else can I have the device recognised? The printer list shows only the one printer and it had the blue check. The scanner also shows "not connected" . After many unplugging efforts it too might scan. Does Mate 20 come with the hplip drivers for the hp 4524 ? How do I view the installed drivers for printer/scanners ? Thanks

The installation of ipp-usb in the synaptic did the trick ;)

The Mate 20 does not recognise the printer/ scanner. Mate 19.3 did. Like older distros, I must unplug the usb replug, to have the psc recognised. Is there a file/update for psc to be automatically recognised as Mate 19.3 did?

if it is going through a hub, try it direct, or change to a different hub. Also try shorter cable.

Does Mate 20 come with the hplip drivers for the hp 4524
absolutely; if you look at HP's list, the HP Envy 4524 only needs 3.15

However go to your PRINTERS folder; how many icons are there in there, for your printer?

Right-click on each in turn; open PROPERTIES; drag the window to the right so you can see all of it; look at MAKE & MODEL

take a screenshot, and show us what it is ..... I suspect it will say
HP ENVY 4500 series driverless, cups-filters 1.27.4
if it says that, hplip is NOT being used, and the new driverless system is attempting to set the printer up

My problem remains that the printer is the error the printer/ scanner is not connected . The computer recognises the psc, it retrieves the driver, yet is shows the not connected error message. I am using a usb cable connection. I was able in the past to unplug the usb cable then replug and the printer would function. Now this doesn't work. These are the error notices, if you have any ideas , much appreciated.

Try different, shorter USB cable.
Try different USB port on computer.
When printer turned on and connected, reboot Mint.

If that doesn't work I don't have a clue.

Terminal command results- alex@alex-OptiPlex-790:~$ sytsemctl status ippusbxd
bash: sytsemctl: command not found
alex@alex-OptiPlex-790:~$ ^C

Odd I powered up the computer, the printer had been left on. I heard the printer start -up. I was able then to print a file .
Why would it take a reboot of the computer to have the printer connected, and functional? The scanner still will not scan a file.

and if ippusbxd is not installed, I suspect one may get this answer

Code: Select all

Unit ippusbxd.service could not be found.
It is accessible through Synaptic; but not routine in Mint 20.1

Hi ecolax;

you were asked a couple of posts back to give us a screenshot of what the printer driver says, when you open it; could you help us by giving us that please?

There are certain parts of plug and play that are only employed during boot. iow, I have simply found that sometimes, it works.

scanners are trickier. Again, with scanner on, reboot, and try with "Document Scanner" in menu. sane and stuff are already there. I one case I had to boot to windows, cause it to recognize the scanner (move the scan bar), and then boot immediately back to Mint and try "Document Scanner". The scanner has to be in a certain state for plug and play to see it on Mint boot.

The printer did work again when I had it powered, and rebooted the computer, so that appears to be the problem. The scanner no.
.I only have Mint Mate 20 installed .No windows for 10 years
When I unplug the usb cable replug the scanner scans, but no image, and the error "unable to scan not connected". But it did scan, just no image. I sure miss my Mate 19.3 no problems.

Thanks for the replies and help ;)

just another thought. when you replug the USB cable to printer/scanner, "the scanner scans" then reboot Mint immediately and try Document Scanner. Else i have no ideas. Again, the idea is to wake the scanner and then reboot and see if plug and play picks it up.

Printers and scanners go dormant after a bit "to save power". Printers may take a few minutes but scanners go dormant pretty quickly.

I reinstalled mate 19.3 on another puter. when I powered up the same psc, the psc was recognised,, a graphic appeared, drivers installed, and the scanner scanned using simple scan. It's too bad when Mate 20 was built, all this functionality was lost.
At least I can have a working psc. I hope there will be an update to resolve this problem.

In my case, installation of additional packages make it working.
hplip (was installed), hplip-plugin (added), hplip-gui (added for a convenience)

Code: Select all

$ apt list --installed | grep hplip

That's on 19? Yeah, that'll do it. I'm lazy. I use 20. That has it.

I'm having the same problem with Mate 21 and my HP Envy 5530. After repeated plug/unplug/restart attempts I tried x-Sane instead of Document Scanner and got the error message displayed below.
