<SOLVED> Another Canon MG2522 install problem

Post by Tramp 116 »

I just purchased a Canon MG2522 printer/scanner to install on my Dell running Mint 19.3 and I can't get it to work.
When I initially plugged it in via USB the print folder showed 2 printers installed. The MG and a generic Canon printer. The Dell and the printer appeared to communicate but the print job for the test page never happened. Just sat in the que.
Thinking I needed the Canon drivers, I downloaded & installed the drivers for the MG2500 series from the Canon Asia server. (cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb). After installing that, when I go into the printer folder, I get the "printing service not available" error message.
I'm thinking there is a conflict between CUPS and the Canon drivers.
I've looked at a lot of suggestions here and tried quite a few. But nothing seems to get me anywhere.
Honestly, I don't really need the printer. But the scanner is a must.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I've been using Mint for 2 years now and I prefer using the terminal. But I do not understand the command syntax. (Reminds me a little of DOS.- Yeah. I'm that old.)

Have you tried
Menu - Printer
& adding the printer there??

It is a separate driver for the scanner...
https://www.canon-europe.com/support/co ... 20(64-bit)

Try adding that..

If you mean Menu/Admin/Printers, that's where I first saw the 2 printers. But I go there now I get the Printing Service not Available error msg.

so this is not an airprint compatible; so it would seem to need the Canon drivers; or gutenprint should cover it; I don't know the status of gutenprint these days

if installing the specific MG2500 driver, I would get (as you say) cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

open a terminal; paste in one by one the commands

Code: Select all

cd Downloads
(assuming that is default site)

Code: Select all

tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

Code: Select all

cd cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb
then crucially run the command

Code: Select all

./install.sh
was that what you did?

Yes.
It was just after following these 3 steps that I started getting the no service error message.
I then tried some posted suggestions about uninstalling and reinstalling CUPS. None of which had any visible effect.

Not sure what airprint or gutenprint are. I don't see either listed in the menu.

As it stands now, in the printer folder (menu/admin/printers) and get the error msg, when I hit F1 (help), the reply is;
"CUPS Service Stopped. The CUPS print spooler does not appear to be running. To correct this, choose System->Admin->Services from the main menu and look for 'cups' service."
I don't have a Services folder in my Admin menu.

This model Canon is an old model, but still being made & sold. To get this Linux driver, you have to go to the Canon Asia (Singapore??) server. It's not available from either the American or European (UK) servers anymore. A lot of the posts I was reading were several years old.

Several of the post stated that the printer and scanner drivers were all included in this single file.

I just checked the Software Manager and it says Printer Driver Gutenprint is installed. Airprint does not appear.

1) CUPS ERROR MESSAGE

so I have to go searching for solutions

this one

https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/cups-se ... 8-04/17381

suggested

Code: Select all

sudo cp /usr/share/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
then

Code: Select all

sudo service cups restart
from here https://linuxconfig.org/linux-cups-tuto ... -beginners

Code: Select all

systemctl status cups
should say if cups is running

eg ours says
systemctl status cups
● cups.service - CUPS Scheduler
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cups.service; enabled; vendor preset: >
Active: active (running)
_____________

any joy?

Yes. That has cleared the error msg and Cups is reporting active.

If I'm reading the tutorial correctly, I will need to add this printer in Cups.
But when I pressed the ADD Printer button, the Cups website asked for a user and password.
Where do I get these from?

well done; glad entering cups directly worked so well; did you have to point to a ppd file? or nominate a driver? we would all be happy to hear;

so you seem to have had 2 problems; but all was predicated on cups not working; then registration of the MG2500 could be done through cups;

well done
