How to connect HP printer (smart tank 7000) on Linux mint 19.3

Post by Ex-Postoid »

I'm in the same boat...but different 'conditions' on the water..lol. Looking for help.

Ok...Running Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon Ver 4.4.8. I have a HP printer (smart tank 7000) that I want to connect via USB printer cable.

If I try this way: System Settings / Hardware / click Printers I get the Printers - localhost box. A "Not Connected" msg lower left corner shows. If I click on Connect I get the Connect to CUPS server box, CUPS server: /run/cups/cups.sock shows so I click Connect and get "failed to connect to server".

I've tried localhost:631 in the browser window and it returns "unable to connect"

Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cups.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Not sure but I think I have CUPS installed ?

Thanks for any assistance!

I really don't know: I see posts of folks
deleting cups
and
reinstalling cups
I am never sure how well it goes; I see some posts where folks just do a clean reinstall; and suddenly all is good;

tell us a little of the history of this system: how long installed; which version; much tinkering with it? other problems etc etc

tell us a little of the history of this system:

how long installed; Since 2019
which version; 4.4.8
much tinkering with it? Not really...Intimidated by the Terminal
other problems etc etc; Been pretty stable..

Wondered about this being the reason I can't use the CUPS web interface :

In order to perform the administrative tasks through the web interface, you must either have the root account enabled on your server, or you need to authenticate as a user in the lpadmin group. For security reasons, CUPS by default won’t authenticate a user that doesn’t have a password.

Unable to connect

Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 127.0.0.1:631.
------------------
Thoughts :
I have a TimeStamp saved dated 8-2021. At that time, I did have a pre-2000 Canon printer hooked up and it worked. It finally bit the dust weeks (i think) later.

Also if I didn't have my name in the ipadmin group, would that prevent me from accessing Localhost:631? How can I check?

I guess as a last resort, I'd like to upgrade down the road to the latest Linux Mint 20.2.

thanks; I am wondering what created; what I am assuming; is a CUPS error;

eg was it an update?

.. so ...... going back in timeshift; ............ to 2 months back ........... will update manager now want to offer you all the updates that it thinks you are missing .. and as you install them, will the error return?

if so, a bit of astute diagnostics needed for you to watch each one

Only time will tell. Looking back, sure looks like a CUPS blunder. Update manager ran, I think, 2 times after the timeshift was finished (Kernel updates, small stuff.. went by fast) I first noticed bookmarks were gone and FF was out of date. I recall when I started using the old Canon printer, I just plugged it in and it worked. No configuration, no connection checks, no CUPS check, it just worked when I hit Ctrl P. When it quit working is when I 'could have' started messing with uninstall / reinstall (frustration can lead you down the wrong road)...I can assure you I knew nothing about CUPS until this call for help. The Localhost-Printers box even showed my old MP210 printer with the new HP printer. All is working fine...for now. Timeshift saved my bacon.
