Printer - Ricoh Aficio MP 161 - No way getting it to work

Post by kpagnussat »

Hello fellow penguins!

I've been trying to install my office printer (RIcoh Aficio MP 161) with no avail. Tried every kind of connection and driver availiable. :(

Here's the output of "lpinfo -v"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Code: Select all

file cups-brf:/
network beh
network lpd
network socket
network ipps
network http
network ipp
network https
direct hp
direct hpfax
network lpd://192.168.0.150/
network smb
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And here's the output of nmap on the printer's IP

Code: Select all

nmap 192.168.0.150
Starting Nmap 7.80 ( https://nmap.org ) at 2022-01-27 09:12 -03
Nmap scan report for 192.168.0.150
Host is up (0.0052s latency).
Not shown: 995 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
23/tcp open telnet
80/tcp open http
515/tcp open printer
631/tcp open ipp
10001/tcp open scp-config

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.46 seconds
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there's a fellow penguin that had issues and know how to deal with dis pesky printer, please, help me.

Any help is apreciated. Thanks for your time reading this.

Can you go to number 5 in the following link and post back.
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83444

How is it connected at the moment?
If by USB, post back with the output to the following command:

Code: Select all

I'm sure someone will get back to you with some advice.

Thanks for replying the post.

It's a network printer, on the IP 192.168.0.150 on my local network.

When I send something to the printer, depending on the configuration ("lpd://192.168.0.150" or lpd://192.168.0.150:515/lp) the system reports its done, but doesn't print anything. On windows machines on other hand, it works on port 10001 and seems to "emulate" a usb connection even tough its not plugged on any usb.

Hope this helps.

so open printing has details https://www.openprinting.org/printer/Ri ... cio_MP_161

they describe how to download a ppd file;

gutenprint is recorded as working as well;

if you read the above; see if any of it is familiar to you;

(do tell us how much you know about linux etc: that would help a lot)

Hey Pdc, thanks for replying!

Well, I've been using linux for 5 years now, I'm not a pro, but a know a thing or two.

The first resource I've came across was openprinting, I've tryed using the recommended Ricoh PDF driver from there, but no sucess. :?

I've tried the ones that come with Mint as well (ps, pxl, mono and even raw printing trough port 10001 and socket connection as i tought that it was the way its configured on windows).

I'm sad that the only thing that bothers me in using linux on my job is this printer. It's not unique to linux mint tough, i've tried fedora and opensuse as well... (but settled on mint being bored of distro hopping).

Well fact is this could be a trivial troubleshoot, but it has been 8 months since i've tried using it. I did an awful long research and tried out all sorts of things, but to no avail. :(

I've been trough mint website and forums and I've noticed that this community seems not to be toxic as many others, so I decidade to ask for help here. :D

Yes, this is generally quite a non-toxic site and well moderated.
Ask away.

I believe that if you are lucky, brian (printer wizard) may see your post and might be able to help you out or someone who has a similar model might spot it......

Confused. Seems to be ppd file on Ricoh site, so should work correctly if cups interface "add new printer" pointed to the downloaded ppd file?

Do you have this PPD file?

Ricoh-Aficio_MP_161-.ppd

With this PPD I can simulate a Ricoh Aficio, it looks like this:

Image

The PPD comes from here: https://www.openprinting.org/printer/Ri ... cio_MP_161

Image

An LPD printer is simulated. Depending on whether you want to connect the printer via USB or Ethernet, the procedure is a bit different.

pdc_2 mentioned gutenprint. Install printer-driver-gutenprint and give

Code: Select all

lpinfo -m | grep 161

Thanks for your reply.

I did that too. What happens is that the printer reports the printing to be done, but nothing comes out of the printer. =/

Is the printer connected via USB or Ethernet?
Do you possibly have both variants in your printer settings?

Don't want to confuse the issue, but I had very similar issues with my Ricoh SP-211 mono laser printer. I too loaded the correct driver etc etc with no output from the printer. Eventually after a LOT of digging on the Internet I found that my particular printer will only work on Linux with the addition of a specific filter (rasterlilo 2) into the cups filter directory and if I provide a ppd file (for the 221 laser printer actually). Then it works fine in Mint. Only mention it to point out the hurdles I had to leap over.

Interestingly the same setup will not work in pure Debian. To make it work in Debian 11 I had to do a load more research and install the following. Don't know whether this may help?

sudo apt install jbigkit-bin printer-driver-all foomatic-db-engine openprinting-ppds

Please let us know how you get on.

dave1953, thanks for your suggestion, when saw your reply tried to do it, unfortunately it has not made it work.

But I'm curious about rastertolilo, the filter you've mentioned, I can't find it anywhere.

This printer sucks, man =/

I'm currently using windows as is a big PITA running a VM just to print stuff.

I must thank your time and effort bro, really apreciate it.
