I suspect what brian helped you install was what is called the generic driver;

I did. A better categorisation would be free and non-free. Mint is not able to distribute the non-free drivers, which does indeed provide three print quality levels. However, I am a little surprised the free driver does not provide acceptable print quality.

Re: Need help installing Epson WF-3520 printer driver [SOLVED]

Post by UltraNewbie »

Sorry, but I'm not going to touch anything on my old laptop, which is currently my only properly functioning computer.

My immediate problem is with the *new* laptop. I downloaded the driver that pdc_2 indicated. Didn't even get as far as trying to install it before all hell broke loose. After downloading it, I clicked on "open file" in the download window. That brought up a window with an orange bar across the top with the message that installing this package would require installing 47 packages, and there was a button on the right side of that orange bar labelled "Details" (the main part of the window, below the orange bar, included an "Install Package" button for the driver). It wasn't clear to me if this message meant that installing the driver (via the button labelled "Install Package") would *cause* 47 other packages to be installed, or that the driver wouldn't work unless I *also* installed the 47 other packages. I figured it couldn't hurt to look at the Details, so I clicked on the Details button. That brought up a little window showing a long list of packages (47, I presume). Pointer was moving slowly; I figured the laptop was busy thinking and would be fine in a few seconds. Um, no. All the buttons/icons on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen proceeded to disappear, including buttons showing all the windows I had open, and also the LM Menu button, the Terminal button, the date/time display . . . everything; it's just a solid green bar now, with faint lines that appear to be dividing the space into two rows and 20+ columns of what look like blank cells in a spreadsheet. The Alt+Tab function to cycle through open windows also stopped working.

The main visible window was an eBay item (I'd been browsing in between morsels of wisdom from you and pdc_2). This is in FIrefox. I have the top bar in FIrefox showing the word-labelled pulldown menus (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help). I can pull down the menus, but moving the pointer down into the choices causes them to instantly disappear. I managed to close the top window, and 3 other eBay windows that showed up. I think there might still be a couple more eBay windows open, and the Epson download center window is presumably still under there somewhere, but I can't see anything except what's on top. I closed the mini-windows for the driver installation and associated "Details". Fortunately, after closing the 4 eBay windows, this thread landed on top, and the refresh button actually worked, and I saw your message. The little window that shows the 3 printer icons (Administration>Printers) is also on top of this window, and I can move it around, but I cannot close it -- the little X in the upper right has disappeared and clicking where the little X should be has no effect. Available pulldown menus are Server, Printer, View, Help. Looks like I *might* be able to close that window by choosing Quit from the Server pulldown menu (unlike the Firefox pulldowns, these choices don't disappear when I move the pointer over them), but I don't really have any reason to close it, so I haven't.

The only thing I can think of to do now is force a shutdown via the power button, and hope that the system will reboot and work normally when I turn it back on. Do you have any other ideas? Please don't ask me to fetch you any information from the terminal or do anything in the terminal, unless you can give me some way to access it with the icon missing.

UltraNewbie is frustrated and frightened :(

UltraNewbie is beginning to have unhealthy fantasies about taking this new laptop to a computer repair shop and telling them to uninstall Linux Mint and install Windows 10 (there's a Windows 10 key on this laptop, but it's not installed, as the reseller didn't want to get involved in setting up a dual boot arrangement). Please stop UltraNewbie from handing over her soul to Microsoft.

Don't do that, try shutting down gracefully first.

Alt + PrtScn + REISUO (or instead of REISUO, REISUB for reboot, it's sorta like the linux equivalent of Ctrl+Alt+Del)

Keep the Alt key pressed for the whole sequence, only if that fails use the power button.

Sounds like a video issue, post the output of inxi -Fxxxrz, it will tell us more about your hardware.

Yes, it's normal for installation of a package to pull in other packages.

Okay, I'll try shutting down "gracefully", and will report back (hopefully from my new laptop, but otherwise from my trusty oldie).

Re: Need help installing Epson WF-3520 printer driver [SOLVED]

Post by UltraNewbie »

This effort seems to be going nowhere. I installed the driver that I downloaded from the Epson site (the one identified by pdc_2: epson-inkjet-printer-201212w_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb 1.64 MB). At the end, the install window told me the same version was already installed. Even after a reboot, there is no change in the print quality options, and as far as I can tell, no change in what driver is being used by the new printer icon (or the old two printer icons). "Make and Model" info for the new printer icon "WF3520" shows as "Epson WF-3520 Series, Epson Inkjet Printer Driver (ESC/P-R) for Linux", same as before. I have this printer icon set as the default printer.

Also, after I installed the new driver, the laptop started having various odd behaviors including CapsLock function being reversed (got lowercase when CapsLock was on, uppercase when CapsLock was off), using Alt+Tab to cycle through open windows was running in reverse from right to left. So I rebooted. Everything seems normal now, but the print situation is the same. The normal quality print is absolutely unusable (always has been, on both physical printers, and printing from my old Linux 17.3 laptop and my even older WinXP laptop).

I thought maybe I needed to change the driver in the "Make and Model" field, since there's a "Change" button just to the right of that field. Clicking the Change button brought up a window with 3 choices for searching for another driver (none of which I really understood), but no sign of the just-installed driver or way to search for an already-installed driver. I tried looking in this Change Driver twice, and both times had to Force Quit to get the window to close (the first time it seemed to have automatically started searching via the first of the 3 options, the second time there was no indication it was doing anything).

I really need to get this working, or I have to just give up on Linux, even though I'd been doing fine with my LM 17.3 laptop for the past 3+ years, and really wanted to stick with it. I'm happy to pay for help, but have no idea where to get knowledgeable and trustworthy paid help that can work remotely, and driving around to distant computer service shops (I'm in a rural area right now) with my laptop AND printer seems like a silly idea, and taking just the laptop somewhere seems like it would have a very iffy chance of success. I don't want to give up, and when brian_p had me print a test page after the generic driver was installed, that came out in high quality and full color, so I know the printer and current ink cartridges are quite capable of high quality printing.

Any suggestions?

I have thought about it. Information on my older laptop relating to a printer which is 1000 miles away, found its way onto my new laptop with no assistance from me. Sometimes things which appear to have no connection to each other, turn out to have some connection that wasn't evident. Not really interested in finding out the hard way right now.

Edit to add: I've been providing all requested information, and will happily continue to do so.

Brian_p: What are those commands you wanted me to execute on my old laptop? Do they *do* anything, or just provide information? Since nothing relating to printing seems to be working as expected on my new laptop, despite multiple knowledgeable people's attempts to help, I am understandably nervous about meddling with my old laptop in any way. Your comment leading into those commands was "Let's try to unbaffle you". If the purpose is to provide useful information to YOU, and these are only information-fetching commands, I'm happy to run them. Unbaffling ME would probably require a full time effort for months, if not years, and is not likely to lead to my being able to print from my new laptop in any useful time frame.

So the printer's scanner is in working order, but I've never been able to use it with Linux Mint because I don't know how to install it.

I really need to get my new laptop fully functional, with printing and scanning functions working via USB connection.

When I print from the Latitude E6510 (old laptop) via USB, I always have to select to correct "copy" of the printer, depending on which location I'm in, otherwise the document will just stay in the print queue for the other printer.

This Epson is recorded as airprint-compatible; I just wonder if a driverless lpadmin command could be helpful; it seems the printer talks to the laptop; given the dnssd read-out: I wonder what brian feels; I wonder too about

Code: Select all

apt install sane-airscan
to see if that will get the scanner going

Not that I really understand any of this, but I'm under the general impression that the references to "user-Latitude-E6510" in both of the original printer icons (on both laptops) are just part of the labels. Though as I previously mentioned, while a computer service/repair shop installed whatever driver made the first printer able to print from the old laptop, and may have given the printer icon its label, when I acquired the second printer, it self-labelled by adding "_2" to the end of the original printer's label. You can't imagine how gleefully surprised I was that the second printer (bought for $20 off Craigslist) just magically worked with the old laptop the minute I plugged the printer into the wall and into the laptop via USB.

thanks very much; I charted some of what you said: to help anyone catching up on this thread;

so the old laptop (E6510) running Mint 17 prints ok to a WF3520?

but the new laptop (E5570) does not; it has Mint 20.3 installed I understand; ???

maybe I pause here to let brian take stock when he next has time to review all;

I just wonder if one of brian's special commands such as

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p WF3520_new -v "dnssd://EPSON%20WF-3520%20Series%20%40%20user-Latitude-E6510-2._ipp._tcp.local/cups?uuid=6226bc2f-89ad-3007-4d07-209c10b92741" -E -m everywhere
would be worth a try ....... over to brian ...

I wonder when you are working on the new laptop (E55770) if you could also have the old one (E6510) turned on at the same time too ... I wonder if that is why we see "user-Latitude-E6510-2." in the above dnssd readout

.... whatever: Mint 17 is past its "end of use" time; so it will not be receiving updates; it should optimally be updated; either to Mint 18; as an upgrade; or a fresh install on Mint 21 that should be available in a month; that suggestion may really distress you; just something to store away until the printing (and scanning) issues can be solved;

so the old laptop (E6510) running Mint 17 prints ok to a WF3520?

but the new laptop (E5570) does not; it has Mint 20.3 installed I understand; ???

maybe I pause here to let brian take stock when he next has time to review all;

I wonder if that is why we see "user-Latitude-E6510-2." in the above dnssd readout

.... whatever: Mint 17 is past its "end of use" time; so it will not be receiving updates; it should optimally be updated; either to Mint 18; as an upgrade; or a fresh install on Mint 21 that should be available in a month; that suggestion may really distress you; just something to store away until the printing (and scanning) issues can be solved;
Old laptop E6510 running Mint 17 does indeed print okay to either of the WF3520 printers, with choice of print quality available. I've never gotten the scan funciton to work, but haven't tried very hard, since the computer shop that installed the printer driver told me they didn't think the scan would work without some further setup.

New laptop E5570, even after "installing" the supposedly full feature driver from the Epson site, still only prints with unusable default quality. I personally can't see any indication that the full feature driver is operational at all. Maybe it's not even installed, but I went through the steps to install it, and it seemed to be installing, but then concluded by telling me that the same driver was already installed.

I turned off the old laptop for several hours yesterday, when one of you asked me to, so the information I provided in the first few hours after that request was with the old laptop turned off. I have since turned it back on, as it's still my daily driver with all my files, printing capability, etc. If I'm not mistaken, "user-Latitude-E6510-2" is a reference to the currently-nearby printer which has a "2" at the end of its label to distinguish it from the other WF3520 printer -- if it was direct reference to the E6510 laptop being detected, I wouldn't expect to see the "2" at the end. That printer (with the 2) is the one currently in the same location as both laptops, and it is currently powered on, but again, yesterday I had it powered off for a while per one of you helpers' request, when I was fetching requested information from the new laptop.

Yes, at some point AFTER I get the new laptop fully operational, I would expect to update the old one to a new version of Mint. Elsewhere I've seen the suggestion that Mint 20.3 will remain preferable for a while (at least for ordinary mortals like me), due to new versions tending to have some pesky bugs in the early months after their initial release. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

so you familiarise yourself with where things are on Mint 20.3;

if you look in the PRINTERS folder; (which is normally inside the ADMINISTRATION folder;)

tell us how many icons are there; then right-click on each in turn; look in PROPERTIES;

drag the window to the right so you can read all the text; look in Make and Model: copy what is in each, and post back here; another way is to take screenshots;

... to take a screenshot, you find the icon from MENU ...... ACCESSORIES then TAKE SCREENSHOT; the third of the options allows you to tailor the area you click;

even if you don't it; if you remember the icons that don't work to print; and write them down somewhere; you may feel able to delete them at some future stage

It looks like there's some text missing from the beginning of your last paragraph. I took screenshots but couldn't figure out how to get them pasted in here.

There are 3 printer icons in the PRINTERS folder. I copied the contents of the first/default tab "Settings" in the Properties window for each. The icon name is shown first.

Screenshots:

PrtScn will take a screenshot of the whole screen, Alt+PrtScn will take a screenshot of the active window. A dialogue box will pop up asking where to save, default is in pictures.

To post on the forum, below the reply window is an attachments tab, click on add files. You should be able to click on pictures in the left pane of the dialog box that appears to get at the file. Once uploaded a "place inline" button appears, click that and it places the screenshot where the cursor is in the reply window. You can click preview to check it is as you want.

There is a size limit of 200kb on file uploads, this is okay for most screenshots. Anything bigger and you need to use a remote site like imgur or convert the file from png to jpg to reduce size.

Terminal output - is a lot easier to read when it is placed between code tags, this tells you how:

This is the queue we set up together using a free driver supplied by Mint. It works, but apparently its print quality is not to your liking. The Device: is USB because it is what you requested.
Epson_WF_3520_Series_user_Latitude_E6510
Description: EPSON WF-3520 Series
Location: user-Latitude-E6510
Device URI: implicitclass://EPSON_WF_3520_Series_user_Latitude_E6510/
Make and Model: Epson WF-3520 Series - epson-inkjet-printer 1.0.0-1lsb3.2 (Seiko Epson Corporation LSB 3.2), driverless, cups-filters 1.27.4
Printer State: Stopped - No destination host name supplied by cups-browsed for printer "EPSON_WF_3520_Series_user_Latitude_E6510", is cups-browsed running?
Location: tells us that that this is a print queue shared by the old laptop. The queue is shared irrespective of whether a printer is attached to the machine. This disposes of the idea that you are picking up a printer from 1,000 miles away.

implicitclass means the queue has been discovered on your network.

Make and Model: is different from the WF3520 queue. The old laptop queue is using the non-free driver. As advised, the non-free driver is what you want for WF3520 too. Get the driver from Epson, install it and we can go from there. Or, maybe it is installed?
