Epson ET-5880 Printer
I am looking to replace my POS Canon G6020 printer because of the total lack of Canon support for Linux ... just fed up with the multitude of problems.
Fair warning: Do not purchase a Canon printer unless you also plan on down-grading to MS Windows.
I will never purchase another product with Canon's name on it.
Does anyone have an Epson ET-5880 printer and how well does it work with Linux Mint (Mate UI)?
FYI:
This is the same as the ET-5850 AOI ECO-Tank printer but with the addition of full Postscript and PCL page description language implementation.
It also has a real Hardwired Ethernet port.

Re: Epson ET-5880 Printer
so lew it ain't much consolation;
but the Canon G6020 is recorded as airprint compatible and so is the Epson ET-5880
... so both would be deemed "driverless" by the driverless community; and the driverless community would say both should work fine with Mint ....
.. yes, technically should is very different to does .........

I hear that you are very frustrated and angry and fed up with the G6020 but could we ask you to run a couple of commands through the terminal, and tell us what you get ...... oh ....... and please say how you tried to connect the G6020 to your computer
I very much fear that if the G6020 will not behave for you; that the ET-5880 will be no better;
if you feel very energetic, if you download an iso; or have one handy on a USB stick; if you boot a USB stick with Mint 20 on it; and then see if the G6020 will recognise the live Mint USB stick ....... if it does, it points to issues in the install of Mint ..... that may be the reason the Canon is not doing well ...........

Re: Epson ET-5880 Printer
I purchased a Windows 10 Mini PC (https://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B09B4S1KLP). It is connected to the Canon via USB. If I have something critical to print then I RDP into the Windows machine and print it from there but that is a pain in the most southern exposure of my torso. I also have to use it for Printer maintenance such as head cleaning, alignment, ink tube flushing, and checking ink levels. As far as I am aware those latter operations can not be done under Linux.
Under Linux I have it connected via hardwired LAN and I am using the Bonjour protocol and yes it is using the 'driverless' drivers. This was after trying the Canon's Linux software as well as numerous other methods. I have wasted far too time on the POS ... it is simply not worth the frustration and waste of time (and I am retired with lots of time). Typical problems are 'Print 5 copies' get '0 or 1 or 2'; envelopes print upside down; unknown 'printer error' ; 'printer offline'. Strangely enough Scanning works fairly well ... most of the time.
Current Settings:
Printer Device URI: dnssd://BonjourG6020._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=00000000-0000-1000-8000-0018650531e5
Printer Make and Model: Canon G6000 series, driverless, cups-filters 1.27.4
Linux Mint 20.2 Una 64 Bit
MATE 1.26.0
Linux Kernel: 5.4.0-117-generic x86_64
===========
See attached file ....... run a couple of commands through the terminal ...
I used to have an HP Inkjet, attached via Ethernet. It is was set via TCPIP and printing was done via Postscript worked great until there was a 500% increase in prices for the ink cartridges. If I get the Epson then I will run it in the same manner (of course the nice thing about the HP is it had a built in web server as well .... that is where all the maintenance and scanning took place). Unfortunately HP tank printers are more expensive and far behind the technology curve compared to Cannon, Epson and Brother.

Re: Epson ET-5880 Printer
so no printers show up;
if you just plug the Canon via usb into the Mint directly;
what do you get please?

Re: Epson ET-5880 Printer
I do not have a USB cable long enough to do that. My Linux Workstation is located in my bedroom and the printer is in a hallway closet. The practical physical path between them would be somewhat convoluted (I have existing CAT 6 LAN cables routed through the walls and attic).pdc_2 wrote: ⤴Mon Jun 27, 2022 6:13 pm so no printers show up;

The most practical method of running linux directly via USB would be to boot the Mini-PC via a live Linux USB stick .... but it is currently headless.
Re: Epson ET-5880 Printer
so this review from 2019 shows your Canon Pixma G6020 has wifi; is airprint compatible;
https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/canon-pix ... ne-printer
so if you have a wireless router, it should ..... be able to be seen by your network; therefore Mint should be able to set it up automatically;
it shows up on the command
I wonder if we use the format brian recommends to set up a print queue, if
will create an icon in your PRINTERS folder called "Lew_G6020" and if you can print with that
.... I keep on this track because seems to me the Canon and Epson are going to behave similarly; and E may not do better than C .......

Re: Epson ET-5880 Printer
Yes, I have seen that review. Here are the results of that command: Device URI: ipp://BonjourG6020._ipp._tcp.localpdc_2 wrote: ⤴Mon Jun 27, 2022 8:07 pm ...commandCode: Select all

It does print a bit quicker, but when I had Libre Office Writer (Version: 6.4.7.2) print 6 copies, I only got one printed.
"More Printer Options" That results in six print jobs and six prints.
Number 10 envelopes (rear tray) still print upside down.
Two side prints prints the first page and generates a "Processing - printer error". The print job has to be "canceled" to clear the print Que.
Of course one still needs Windows for the Printer Maintenance as well
... and call me stubborn, pigheaded, ignorant and/or foolish but I would still like to know if anyone has any experience running the ET-5880 under Linux particularly in Postscript mode. Yes I like Postscript. My first postscript printer was huge, heavy, letter size, 600 DPI printer with full length, full height card in the PC to digitize the documents. It had an additional linked card for the SCSI1 cable. That was about three decades ago. I used it and Pagemaker to print Company Product brochures. I also wrote native PostScript code to print the company Logo during a second pass through the printer.
Re: Epson ET-5880 Printer
well, if you have set your heart on the 5880, go for it; you can't take it with you
