Mounting Partitions RESOLVED-Yeah

Post by GELvdH »

I have 3 systems, one Laptop and two Desktops. When I start them up, the Laptop mounts the Timeshift and Date partition on boot but the Desktops do not. Here is an attachment of the printout of the three systems. Well that didn't work, the file is too large, (had screenshots attached). Lets try three separate files without screenshots.

OK but work and provide reports for one system at a time.

It's a quick read
What specifically is your question?

The problem is that the laptop mounts the Data partition on boot up but the desktops don't, even though I have all three set up the same way. I ask because the issue seems to be related to the desktop configuration and I can't figure out what differentiates them from the laptop setup.

Good so far. Lets reference just your desktop.
Where is the data partition that desktops can't mount?
You will need partition mountpoints to see other partitions.
Are you capable with terminal instructions?

Re: Mounting Partitions

Unfortunately all of my computer problems are inter-related so going to just one is not going to solve the issue. All of my systems have a secondary storage device (either HDD or a multi-card reader with a 500gig sim chip in the laptop). My question is simply why does the laptop with the multi-card reader mount the storage device but the desktops with the HDD don't. This is a screen shot of the desktop HDD I am writing on. The secondary drives on the desktops don't mount until I physically open a file on them wheras the laptop mounts the partition on startup. I tried to set the mount options to automatically on startup but that did not work.

I say your machines are not inter-related. All of my machines have secondary storage devices, but there is no common element to them except for LM. They are separate systems.

Pick one - I say desktop 2 - and give us the output of

Code: Select all

lsblk -o NAME,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINT,LABEL,UUID | grep -v "squashfs"
and

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l
and

Code: Select all

cat /etc/fstab
and ideally put the output in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these tags is marked </>, which is in the mini toolbar above the edit box where you type your reply.

Seems like your fstab don't have any entry for those drives, you should add it

for example:
create the directories for the mountpoint and a backup copy of your current fstab

Code: Select all

sudo mkdir /mnt/timeshift-backups
sudo mkdir /mnt/data-drive
sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.backup

And add this to your /etc/fstab

Code: Select all

/dev/sdb1  /mnt/timeshift-backups   ext4    defaults        0       2
/dev/sdb2  /mnt/data-drive   ext4    defaults        0       2
or using UUID instead /dev/drive

Code: Select all

UUID=35f68858-baf9-44c3-b317-d92483ce8fd8  /mnt/timeshift-backups   ext4    defaults        0       2
UUID=d4b6dc57-b888-44fb-a1b9-0e3b1cc12066  /mnt/data-drive   ext4    defaults        0       2
Tip:on my desktop setup i have a 2TB drive as my data drive, and to make it feel "seamless" i symlinked the home sub folders Documents, Downloads, Music and Video to my 2TB drive.

Unless you are using your timeshift partition for anything else, there is no point mounting it in fstab. Timeshift automounts the snapshot partition at /run/timeshift/backup. I have my backup partition mounting at /media/ultrabay via fstab, timeshift still insists on mounting it at /run/timeshift/backup as well.

OK, I inserted the following UUID in the fstab
UUID=d4b6dc57-b888-44fb-a1b9-0e3b1cc12066 /mnt/data-drive ext4 defaults 0 2
but it would not let me save the file afterwards. Any suggestions?

You will need to edit /etc/fstab as root.
Right-click /etc and choose to open as root.
Navigate to a file named fstab and open with a text editor.
Add the entry, save the file, and then in a terminal run:

Code: Select all

sudo mount -a
That will verify the syntax--if no errors then:

Code: Select all

 sudo update-grub
Now take ownership of that mountpoint.

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R gunter:gunter /mnt/data-drive
make sure gunter:gunter is the correct username and group
Otherwise:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /mnt/data-drive
will change the owner:group to the currently logged in user and group.
Either should give you full access.
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.

Unfortunately that did not resolve my issues.
1. I have to open a file (any file) on my Data partition before any of my programs will recognize the data partition as containing any data.
2. And this is a somewhat separate issue, my two desktops loose internet connection after time, I have not checked the exact amount but it seems like about a half hour. This does not happen with my laptop, it stays active. I have looked into screen timeouts and other shutdowns that I could think of but nothing jumps out about internet disconnection. When I loose the connection, I have to reboot to get the internet back and than go through the same routine of opening a file on the data partition as before. It is driving me crazy (not a drive just a short put).

And is that file on the Data partition at /mnt/data-drive or at /media/gunter/DATA ?

On one desktop it is at

Code: Select all

/media/gunter/Data
on the other it is at

Code: Select all

/media/gunter/DATA
When I set the drives up I had one in all caps and the other in caps and lower case.

If you have this in fstab:
UUID=d4b6dc57-b888-44fb-a1b9-0e3b1cc12066 /mnt/data-drive ext4 defaults 0 2
And it's mounting under /media/gunter/Data or /media/gunter/DATA your fstab entry is being ignored. I have no idea why that would be.

OK, here is my fstab.

Code: Select all

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
# / was on /dev/sda2 during installation
UUID=35f68858-baf9-44c3-b317-d92483ce8fd8 /               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1
UUID=d4b6dc57-b888-44fb-a1b9-0e3b1cc12066 /mnt/data-drive ext4 defaults 0 2
# /boot/efi was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=AF89-EE90  /boot/efi       vfat    umask=0077      0       1
/swapfile                                 none            swap    sw              0       0
I don't see anything wrong with it but that don't mean anything.
The partition shows up as mounted under Disks but I can't access it or any folders.

Yes, but where?

Does it show this:
Disks-b-Gone.png
If it does someone who actually uses the silly Disks utility needs to help you though this. I am not one of them.

Does /mnt/data-drive exist? If you created /mnt/Data or /mnt/DATA, your fstab will be ignored.
