Edimax EW-7611UCB (Realtek RTL8821AU?)

Post by lozanoje »

Hello:

I just cant get the Edimax EW-7611UCB to work in Mint 19.

According to the web page:

https://www.edimax.com/edimax/merchandi ... ew-7611ucb

It is a RTL8821AU. Support told me that my kernel was not supported by the driver at the web page.

I've tried also:

https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux

No luck, driver installed, but wifi not working.

No success, the solution points out to 8812 which I think is the same driver as 8821, but even when the installation went fine, my usb wifi wasnt detected.

Even the vendor id is different from that of Realtek:

jelozano@jelozano-pc:~$ lsusb
[...]
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 7392:b611 Edimax Technology Co., Ltd

But the driver from Edimax is: rtl8821AU_WiFi_linux_v5.2.6.3_20180319

Did you reboot?

Yes, following the instructions i rebooted. The only noticeable issue is that when editing the NetworkManager.conf file, the modifications were already there.

I'm sorry, my box of tricks is empty.... I advise to contact forum member chili555 or JeremyB. Those are the WiFi guru's. :)

Ok, no problem, thanks anyway, do you think this driver is suitable for my stick?

I don't know, if it is important here, but on Pjotr's website it is necessary for RTL-drivers that Secure Boot is disabled in the BIOS?

I've searched in some databases, but the Device ID b611 for Edimax can't be found (only b711).

Yes, it is disabled, I checked it (mokutil --sb-state).

Have you tried the adapter with all usb slots? You have USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 slots and the adapter is USB 2.0.

Nope, I used in the usb 3.0, which is the same I am using in Windows 10 with no problems, I'll check,

Try this

Code: Select all

xed ~/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux/os_dep/linux/usb_intf.c
Scroll to line 318 that looks like

Code: Select all

	{USB_DEVICE(0x7392, 0xA811),.driver_info = RTL8821}, /* Edimax - Edimax */
Change the A811 to B611, save and exit, then in terminal

Code: Select all

cd ~/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux
make clean
make
sudo make install
Reboot and see if it works
Post results for

Code: Select all

dkms status

I think I tried all of them, but finally... IT WORKS!!!

I've used the git that was updated the last,

https://github.com/scrivy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux

Also, I did not replace the line you mentioned, instead I added a new one line for my usb:

{USB_DEVICE(0x7392, 0xB611),.driver_info = RTL8821}, /* Edimax - EW-7611UCB */

And after a reboot, it worked perfectly.

Thank you very much, @JeremyB, I'd like to know more linux, but I fear I am yet a little noob.

Ok, good. I changed my fork at https://github.com/jeremyb31/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux to include that device.
If you installed originally using dkms you will need to edit the file in /usr/src/rtl8812au-4.3.14/os_dep/linux/usb_intf.c the same way so when you install a newer kernel, the change is included

I used make install, so the best option is to uninstall and install again using dkms, add the device to the usb_intf.c file so that every time I change kernel, the driver is updated automatically, isnt it? Sorry if i do not use proper technical language, and thank you again, Sir!

Easiest to do

Code: Select all

xed admin:///usr/src/rtl8812au-4.3.14/os_dep/linux/usb_intf.c
Make the same change and save, dkms won't notice and should work for the next kernel

Well, seems that the driver is not stable for my device, it keeps disconnecting and every time it adds a new wireless connection:

See if

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8812au rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8812au.conf
Makes it any better after a reboot
Locked
