[Solved] WiFi intermittent

Post by wedwardes »

My wifi has recently become intermittent. I thought it was a Linux Mint 20 issue but on rolling back to Linux Mint 19.3 I have the same problem with the WiFi dropping off.

The Wifi works on 2 phones, a Windows 10 laptop and 3 other Linux Mint XFCE 19.3 machines.

I bought an external WiFi USB but I don't see this laptop recognizing it.

How can I disable the installed WiFi card and try the USB WiFi dongle?

Is there a fix for the installed WiFi card?

Please post the results for each of the following commands. Here is how:

Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Execute the following commands, one at a time.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state

Code: Select all

rfkill list all

Code: Select all

 iwconfig

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

 lspci
Mark the complete text output which each command will display with your mouse.
Press the keyboard shortcut <Shift><Ctrl>C to copy the marked text into the clipboard.
Enclose the results for each command between the code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply then paste <Ctrl>V them in your reply between the code markers.

The results will help us to help you.

Try a live session of Mint 19.2 and see if wifi works there on the 4.15 kernel.

Either that or try the 4.15 kernel on 19.3.

Turn power management off & see if that helps:

Code: Select all

 sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

Done that. Let's see.

EDIT

3 hours no crash. Seems to be working on 19.3 XFCE

Could you explain why you thought of this solution?

Ok, good. :) The iwconfig you posted showed power management was on. I knew it should be off just from seeing similar problems before.

9 hours no crash. Beats 5 minutes.

Very many thanks.

I am on 19.3 XFCE. Should I again try 20.0 XFCE or are there issues?

Presumably same instruction to switch off power save?

You can try 20.0, if it works, great. If not, just go back to 19.3.
