[Solved] Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
The first I ran this command "sudo apt install r8168-dkms" I only got the following E: unable to locate package r8168.
One day later I tried it again and it did download and install. The LAN connection issue has become even more acute than before.
This includes Mint 20.1; Manjaro 20.1 and Solus. Only Windows 7, appears not to be impaired with this Ethernet issue.
This problem seems to have worsen over the past week, to the point every reboot bars connectivity.
The only conclusion I can observe is that it is a software issue.

Re: After Upgrade to Linux Mint 20 Ethernet connection issues
It did not work. In the network manager, I went from "Profile One" to "Connection One" several times
and was finally connected to the Internet.
I am now assuming a file change is necessary. This is a major issue for Linux software.

From your inxi:
Network: Device-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet vendor: Gigabyte
driver: r8168 v: 8.048.00-NAPI port: ee00 bus ID: 03:00.0 chip ID: 10ec:8168
IF: enp3s0 state: up speed: 1000 Mbps duplex: full mac: <filter>
Your inxi shows your ethernet is up. Can you ping your router? If no, restart your router and try again.

Re: Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
Karl, this is not a wireless issue but rather an Ethernet. Nevertheless, I turned off IPv6 and rebooty
which did not resolve the problem.
This is the most madding tech issue I ever had with Linux.
Larry, I pinged the IP and all is well. No sure how to ping a router.
I would place my bet on that this is a "driver" issue.

One user suggests a solution would be a PCIE Ethernet, with an Intel based card.
This is a Debian issue, according to another poster.

Your Inxi said your driver is up. Hence, try pinging your router.blueicetwice wrote: ⤴Sat May 08, 2021 3:00 pmOne user suggests a solution would be a PCIE Ethernet, with an Intel based card.

Re: Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
DPM, thanks for the tip. I did ping my IP and received four ping back. So there is no issue with our old router.
I also use ping on the golf course.

Re: Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
Not sure if you did this already, but shutdown all & restart router, modem & machine.
Re: Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
It also means you have no driver issue. The other tip with re-powering the router and modem can help - I sometimes have that, too. Something is wrong with the internet connection beyond the router, and the router fails to recover it.blueicetwice wrote: ⤴Sat May 08, 2021 3:06 pmDPM, thanks for the tip. I cast a vote for you as Mint's Sage of the Month No need to purchase the Intel PCIE card.
Now to check Manjaro and Solus. DPM, I am indebted to you for your wise knowledge and support.
EDIT: I also learned that pinging the router, indicates no driver issues.
EDIT II: Manjaro and Solus also connected to the Internet. I removed [on all three OSs] two additional
network connection options as was advised.

Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
Rig came out of sleep and the same issue - no Internet.

Re: [SOLVED] Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
I suspect that this may have something to do with your router settings. In your router, you'll have the option of tying your machine's hardware always to the same local IP, and that will usually do the trick. Otherwise, your PC wakes up again and thinks it has the old IP - but your router sees it as a new machine and assigns a different IP so that both sides don't quite agree on what the IP actually is.blueicetwice wrote: ⤴Sat May 08, 2021 8:14 pmRig came out of sleep and the same issue - no Internet.
So what I do then is logging into the router (with a browser) and following the instructions of the router's manufacturer. There is some way how to bind an ethernet MAC (the one of your PC) to always the same local IP address, but that is specific to your particular router model.

Re: Linux Mint 20.1 Ethernet connection issues
DPM, that it is what it always does, assign a new IP address. This has been happening
for months. I thought about assigning a fixed IP address, to see if that would fix the problem but
I never did because I thought it would not work.
I better try your fix.
