share desktop mint 20.1 & mint 19.3

Post by RobertGM »

I have searched and found multiple instances of desktop sharing packages.
I have tried: Remmina, KRDC, VNC Viewer, X11VNC Server, TeamViewer, etc, I cannot get any of them to work.
I have three computers to connect. Two are running Linux Mint 20. One is with Mint 19.3.
Previously, with a couple of computers running Mint 17.3, I had no trouble at all with this.
Some guidance is appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback. Where I get lost is how to enable sharing of a desktop.
This used to work simply. You enabled the desktop to be shared then accessed it on another computer with a separate program. (I forget the name of the programs in Mint 17.3.)
Do I, for example, now need to add NoMachine to both computers?

Yes, once your have fired it up, you get an icon in your system tray and it's running in the background. From then on automatically runs on boot.

Click options (if I had another PC running with nomachine it would show in the list):

Thanks AndyMH.
I tried installing NoMachine from the instructions here:
https://www.tecmint.com/nomachine-an-ad ... cess-tool/.
Unfortunately the files do not download. "... failed: Connection timed out."
And, manyroads, those links are old. Things changed regarding desktop sharing in Mint 19.3.

I looked at that site but did not know which of the three packages to download:

NoMachine for Linux RPM x86_64
NoMachine for Linux DEB amd64
NoMachine for Linux TAR.GZ

Or what to do with whichever one after downloading it.

You want the deb file. All distros based on ubuntu can use deb files for installing software. amd64 means for 64 bit CPUs, so if you are using an old 32 bit PC you are out of luck.

To install, open up your file manager, navigate to where you downloaded it and double click on it to install.

Thanks AndyMH
I was all set to say IT WORKED. Well, it did.
Then I rebooted the remote computer from the NoMachine display on my desktop.
And now I can no longer LOGIN to the other computer. (This was never a problem before.)
Now, I receive a list of usernames and user names.
I choose myself and type in the password and nothing happens or I get an invalid password notice.
I've also asked about this in the Topic "local network not working: viewtopic.php?p=2016214#p2016214

You can't remotely reboot a computer. Once it reboots you have to be physically present to login again. The nomachine daemon doesn't run until after you have logged in = no communication.

I routinely use nomachine to shut down my desktop (up two flights of stairs in the loft). But if I want start it again, I have to go upstairs and boot it manually. Then I can talk to it again from my laptop downstairs.

Thanks AndyMH,
I did not know that I had to shut down the computer being viewed remotely.
I forget the name of the remote desktop program, back in Mint 17.3, but I could reboot the remote computer using it.
Now I cannot login to the other computer. And I shut it down first, then turned it off for a bit. No luck.

You can't boot the remote PC when sat in front of it physically booting?

Not had that one before and can't think of a reason why related to nomachine. If true, start a new topic.

Right. I cannot login to the remote computer while standing in front of it.
As per your request, I've started a new Topic:
