EDUP EP AC1621 - Connection drops after some time, keeps asking for password

Post by LuizAsFight »

Hi everybody!
I had a lot of trouble trying to make this adapter(EDUP EP AC1621) work. It's working now but after some time it drops the connection, keeps asking for password forever, and the wi-fi icon gets ... over it.

Here's how I make it work again:
1- sudo sh -c "echo '2' > /sys/module/8814au/parameters/rtw_switch_usb_mode"
2- reboot

sometimes it doesn't work, then I keep repeating the process until it work :x

RIGHT NOW the connection dropped. I'll print outputs here with it not connected, then save the text to post when I get online.

See if power management is on, check:

Code: Select all

 iwconfig
If it is, turn it off:

Code: Select all

 sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

I had done this too, didn't help.

When I first got this adapter working I had done a lot of install/uninstall stuff. I think it might be related with this, my dkms status seems weird

I can't say if it's related to that or not. Have you tried restarting router, modem & machine? Or, restart Network Manager:

Code: Select all

 sudo service network-manager restart

After restarting, it tries to connect again, but keeps asking for password forever.

Since today the workaround I used to do stopped to work completely. I'm posting using a crap old wifi adapter that I have.

See if this does any good:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kelebek333/kablosuz
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt install rtl8812au-dkms
Reboot

If not, it may well be something wrong in your dkms status, but I'm not able to help with that.

I don't know if it will work or not, but worth a try since it's not working now anyway. Your inxi says 8814au driver is already installed.

Here's a script specific for your RTL8814AU wifi card. Open a terminal and execute it one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install git build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
git clone https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8814au.git
cd rtl8814au
make
sudo make dkms_install
Reboot and test.

Well it's better than before. Actual status is: After rebooting, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work and keep asking for password again and again and again.

I'm suspecting it's something related to USB3/2. My adapter is USB3 based.
https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8814au says the driver "initial it will use USB2.0 mod", and has a TODO: "* Fix USBModeSwitch function (and switch between USB2 and USB3/SuperSpeed)"

If other people are interested, here's what I had done:
1- Removed all dkms using this method https://tutorialforlinux.com/2020/08/07 ... -04-lts/2/
2- installed rtl8812au as @sleeper12 told
3- installed rtl8814au as @Larry78723 told

now my dkms status is looking like this

Code: Select all

8814au, 5.8.5.1, 5.8.0-55-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl8812au, 5.6.4.2~ppa, 5.8.0-55-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!)

It seems unlikely that you would need both the rtl8812au & rtl8814au, so you may want to play around with that.

I'm keeping 8812 as a backup as my old crap 8812 adapter works fine and prevents me from being totally offline

the new 8814 adapter stills unstable and honestly I'm almost giving up on it

Yeah that makes sense, I'm just thinking on a way to get prepared to install rtI8812 if I'm offline, then I'll do it. Any ideas?

Thanks for helping !
