Home WiFi became unusable

Post by Yaroslav_P »

Dear community,
My home WiFi from TP-LINK became unusable for my ThinkPad laptop with Linux Mint Tina after returning from the trip.
Perhaps some networks where I connected during the trip triggered some changes in setting on my laptop.
It is expressed in big delays of packages, random stalls etc.
When I initiate connecting to my home WiFi, first half a minute it even can't resolve DNS, for example, ping youtube.com results in Name or service not known.
After some time the command starts to bring packages but randomly stalls for a long time.

This home network worked fine previously with my laptop.
It still does for smartphone (no delays for Internet) and the router works fine for desktop with cable connection.
The laptop still works fast with other WiFi networks - the hotspot from the smartphone unfreezes the routing on the laptop.
I've read other topics here, regarding the power management setting, but I have an impression that the problem is not in that area.
Looks like some conflicting subnetworks, sorry if such suggestions sound lame.

I also noticed that Network Manager sometimes doesn't show all networks available or even hides the current network where it is connected too, but I'm not sure if such behavior is a new one.

I'll be grateful for any suggestions on how to troubleshoot. Below is the output from several commands found in parallel topic.

Turn power management off & see it if helps any:

Code: Select all

 sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

You could also update your kernel to 4.15.0-144. The 4.15.0-54 kernel you have is quite old.

Re: Home WiFi became unusable

Hello,
I tried to boot from several flesh drives: Mint, Ubuntu, Puppy Linux.
In all cases, the pattern was the same: quick Internet with hotspot and handicapped work with the router.
This morning the laptop stopped working with the hotspot as well and refused to connect to router wifi at all.
Those were bad signs, perhaps the hardware started to malfunction.
I turned power management off, rebooted.
For some time there were difficulties with connecting to wifi, but in few minutes it connected, and the speed is awesome!
I rebooted to check if the connection persists, - it does.
So I don't know what happened, likely the hardware is gradually declining.
I don't attribute it to Linux malfunction.
So far wifi is working, but I will keep this topic to monitor the status for a while.
It's good if the power management settings did the miracle, but it was weird.
