Can't connect to the Internet

Post by MarkWillenbrock »

Apologies in advance for my undoubted stupidity.

I have a HP laptop with Linux Mint that's worked impeccably.

I put Linux Mint on my parents desktop and they loved it.

Now I've put it on my dad's Thomson (cheap) notebook... and I cannot get it to connect to the WiFi.

It did connect through a cable and my phone for a while, but seems reluctant to now.

I have a Netgear N600 dongle I can use, but believe it needs drivers?

Bluetooth doesn't work

I've been through the forums several times but most of the commands don't seem to work.

Help!

Without some technical information, we can’t help you. Please post an inxi -Fxxxzr report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and on how Mint sees it.

Here is how to generate the report and post it:

Boot from your installation media (USB/DVD)
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Execute the command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxzr
exactly as it has been typed here.

Mark the complete text output which the command will display with your mouse.
Press the keyboard shortcut <Shift><Ctrl>C to copy the marked text into the clipboard.
Enclose the results between the code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply then paste <Ctrl>V them in your reply between the code markers
Results
.

The results will help us to help you.

If you have found the solution to your initial post, please open your original post, click on the pencil, and add (Solved) to the Subject, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

No Network Devices show on that machine. With the dongle plugged in, post the results of:

Code: Select all

lsusb && lspci && rfkill list && iwconfig && mokutil --sb-state

Hello
Why are you using a wifi dongle?
From what I found on internet your machine has integrated wifi (your model is Thompson NEO14A?)
If this is your model it has a special function key to enable/disable wifi (the key has a wifi antenna and you have to use the blue Fn key)
Maybe by mistake you disable it?
For my daily use a CLEVO laptop with LM20.1 booting Legacy
And for my testing a Dell laptop with W10, LM20.1 and Manjaro booting UEFI

That may be,rfkill will show if it's disabled (hard blocked) or not.
