WiFi won’t connect? I am today-new to Linux [not really] ~~(SOLVED?!)~~

Post by Kektagon »

I have no idea what I’m doing, I’ll admit. I bought this (used) computer and it won’t connect to WiFi. Other devices have no issue connecting. All the info I have is on the paper I took a picture of, and it says the pc is running on Mint (cinnamon 19.3).

When I try to connect, and I know the password is correct, I get a prompt that says ‘activation of network connection failed. Sometimes it will ask me to re-enter the password and does the same thing anyways.’Image

I’m sorry if none of this is helpful information, but I don’t know what is and isn’t.

First establish temporary internet connection by other means, for example by means of the USB tethering feature of your cell phone.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and don't omit the space after inxi!)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Do the same with the following four commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lspci

You might need the wl driver, try:

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe -rv bcma wl

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe -v wl
Also, if you have secure boot on that machine, be sure it's disabled in Bios. You can check:

Code: Select all

 mokutil --sb-state

ok, I typed those commands in, and this is what I got:

sudo modprobe -rv wl

modprobe: FATAL: Module wl not found.

sudo modprobe -v wl

modprobe: FATAL: Module wl not found in directory /lib/modules/5.4.0-58-generic

mokutil --sb-state

umm, nothing. I typed in the command, it asked me for the password, and then it just went to the next prompt for me to enter.

I still suspect you need the wl driver, but not sure if that's the case. So, wait for someone who will know how best to proceed.

Just guessing here, but you could try:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe -rv bcma wl

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe -v wl

Interesting, I'm not sure what got it going either since those commands don't seem to have changed anything. :? But, if wifi works, you are good for now. :)

Well, apparently not.

It connected the one time, and when I came to it today, it has refused to connect again, and I’m back to square one. And when the internet was working, it was weak. I know the signal strength isn’t a problem because my phone in the same room works just fine, connection wise. There were, *apparerntly*, 121 updates that needed to happen and the damn thing keept not doing them.

I’m about ready to give up on the computer.

Try this: Open a terminal and run the following commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
Then

Code: Select all

sudo apt install broadcom-sta-dkms

This may be part of the problem:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
bcmwl-kernel-source : Depends: libc6-dev but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

If what Larry suggested doesn't work, see if you can fix that in Synaptic, Edit, Fix Broken Packages.
