[SOLVED] No Wifi after install of mint 20.1 (Acer E5-552 with Realtek r8169 driver)

Post by Scort »

Hi folks ... I'm brand new to Linux world. Very excited to finally take the plunge ... so sick of Windows 10, 2 hour updates. I have installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.1 on my aging (5 or 6 years old now) Acer laptop. Install went fairly smooth. Had to work out a few bugs getting it to boot from the usb drive, but finally succeeded. Yay !

However, I now face the issue of being unable to connect to my wifi hotspot created from my LG G4 phone. My other laptop connects fine, and so did this one until the fresh install. I have read a number of posts here regarding this issue and tried quite a few terminal commands suggested my various members, but to no avail, thus far. Would very much appreciate any help you good folks can provide. I'm guessing it might be a driver issue, based on some of my reading, but unsure at this point.

I have not used forums of any type for a very long time, so I respectfully ask for your indulgence while I learn the posting ropes. Here is a copy of one of the terminal commands.

Code: Select all

Network:
Device-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet
vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: r8169 v: kernel port: 2000
bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10ec:8168
IF: enp1s0 state: down mac: <filter>
Device-2: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter
  vendor: Lite-On driver: ath10k_pci v: kernel port: 2000 bus ID: 02:00.0
  chip ID: 168c:0042
IF: wlp2s0 state: down mac: <filter>
ps: the icon bottom right does show that I am connected to the Telus hotspot (between 65 and 75 %) of my phone, but I cannot connect to the internet to get updates or downloads of any kind.

Turn power management off & see if that helps:

Code: Select all

 sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

Does not seem to have any effect sleeper 12. Just goes to the next line of terminal.

Are you dual booting with Win10? If so, start Win10, go to Power Management, and turn off Fast Restart. Shut down then boot into Mint and check your wifi.

Not dual booting. If I am only trying to connect the linux laptop to hotspot, it shows as connected via the icon down in the tray bottom right ..... but cannot get out to the web.

The linux lappy will not connect to the hotspot if my windows laptop is already connected to it. That could be some setting on my phone, however, that will not allow multiple connections.

After executing your last command, another connection showed up in the wifi connections section. Looks like a laptop perhaps.

Here are new results of latest command.

I'm not sure what went wrong with that last command, but maybe go into Bios & see if you can disable secure boot.

Update:

Tried to reinstall using uefi mode. Upside was I could now connect to hotspot and reach the web. However, this was in live mode prior to permanent install. After install and reboot, I kept getting a "no bootable device" message. Thought I had really borked it up good. Decided to reflash the usb stick and re-install back in legacy mode. Long story short, everything now works. Did all the updates. Seems no drivers were additionally required. Not sure what the original issue was, but so glad to have it all running. Using the linux lappy for this message :)

Many thanks to all those that took the time to have a look and help out. Look forward to chatting with you all again down the road.

Let the linux life begin lol ......

Cheers folks !

Are you still using the old 5.4.0-58 kernel that you had before? If so, you might want to update to the 5.4.0-80.
