[solved] Wifi is connected but unusable. Also why is it entering promiscuous mode?

Post by kafka64 »

Hi

I recently upgraded to Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon and have been experiencing weird issues after resuming computer from suspend.

When I resume computer from sleep, my panel will report that I am connected to my AP but I cannot connect to anywhere. I can't ping, dig nor load webpage. I have been using mint without problem for one full year so I am not sure what could be causing this.

Three observations I made:

0. disconnecting and reconnecting to AP does not change anything. I still cannot connect to anywhere
1. Inspecting dmesg, my wireless adaptor is keep entering promiscuous mode. Is this normal/expected beahviour when I am not running any sniffer?
2. If I shutdown a VM that is running in VirtualBox, disconnect and reconnect to AP, things return to normal. Could VirtualBox be interfering with my connection somehow? But I never had this problem before so it is really strange.

Any hints or suggestions on where to look further would be highly appreciated. Thanks

I figured it out... my VMs are running on bridged network so my host's network card have to be in promiscuous mode.
