Wifi not connecting after 20.2 update

Post by WL7JA-7 »

Hello

One of the several Dell's I purchase through auctions, I install Linux Mint on these PC's, donated then to Veterans like myself through the Wounded Warrior Project in the US. One of the clients I gave this to updated from 20.1 to 20.2....And had a problem connecting to WiFi. My efforts to troubleshoot are below.

Update from 20.1 to 20.2 WiFi connected fine on 20.1, after update no connect, I am able to see WiFi SSID's but no connect. Using a Dell Optiplex 7010 with a USB Ralink WiFi Antenna, latest drivers installed and network-manager-config-connectivity-ubuntu installed. When WiFi attempts to connect received the following error: Password or encryption keys are required to access the Wi-Fi. I enter correct Password, Wifi attempts to connect but fails. Drivers are current. Only thing I haven't tried is a fresh install. Any help would be appreciated.....

That all looks fine, so no clue. Maybe restart router/modem & machine, reinsert adapter.

I have tried all of that, although when I monitored the dmesg output the problem jump out. Look at line 12 below. "1.0 wlxe84e0637457a: renamed from wlan0". I remember a user had the similar problem with 18.3 and 19.2

The VET I am working with is deaf from an IED blast, so not able to resolve issues over the phone with him. Think i'll just preform a fresh install. And see that happens then. I appreciate your help with troubleshooting.....:)

That's a normal operation of the kernel and not something that is usually looked at. The problem could be the NIC itself, so trying an add-in card or USB dongle may be in order.

I installed mint 20, same result. The following fix the problem:

Code: Select all

Update APT database:

sudo apt update

Install the old networking:

sudo apt install ifupdown net-tools

Disable the new DNS:

sudo systemctl disable systemd-resolved.service

To change your interface name back to the old "eth0" that you're familiar with, edit the /etc/default/grub file and change the line with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX to look like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0"

Now load the new Grub configuration:

sudo update-grub

And reboot to apply your changes:

sudo reboot

Code: Select all

Other option is create a rules file:
sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*", ATTR{address}=="00:0c:29:43:28:11", ATTR{dev_id}=="0x0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*", NAME="eth0"

reboot
Locked
