Lost internet Linux Mint 20.2

Post by bobswusa »

I have gradually lost all internet connectivity in the past few weeks. At the end, I could only connect via the VPN. Now cannot connect at all. I have tried some of the commands in previous posts, and have reconnected the internet cable and restarted the machine, modem and router without success. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi bobswusa ,
welcome to our forum.
:)

which method(s) were you using to get your Internet ?.
and in which order did they Fail ? was that after any LinuxMint Update ?

can you also tell us something about your machine:
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=318644
copy the results of that, back here, on your reply.

Hi bobswusa

When I'm in doubt about internet connection problems, regardless of if it's my desktop or laptop, I simplify things to the most simple possible level.
1. Ensure that VPn is disabled ( hell .if needs be..uninstall it from that PC. You can always reinstall later)
2. Disconnect all devices in between that PC and the internet modem.
3. Connect via physical ethernet cable directly to that ModemShut down the PC completely.
4. Power cycle the modem. Wait at least 120 full real seconds...before you power that PC back on.

If success..meaning you can pull up multiple websites that aren't just cached ( google.com even ), Then reconnect via physical ethernet connection to that PC and modem.. Power off the PC, power off the modem. Power the modem back, wait 120 seconds, then power on the router on wait at least 90 seconds. Power the PC back on.

If success, then great, if it's a laptop and it's a success but you prefer to be wireless, now you take it from there ensuring the wireless is enabled on that Laptop's settings be it physical slider/button/toggle switch ( if applicable depending on the model), or if it's only software gui...then so be it.

Once there, while you're at it...post results of the "inxi -Fxxxrz" without quotes using that </> button ( fifth from the left just above the message window) so we have an idea of what we're working with here. It will save a lot of speculation time and asking unneeded questions.

Thanks for the help.

I tried directly connecting the ethernet cable to the modem, bypassing the router and power cycling both the modem and machine without success.

Not sure how to post a inxi report from my linux since the internet is out on it.

The problem started weeks before the update, I think the regular non VPN internet started to go out first, but I'm not certain. I have since deleted the VPN.

On that LM 20.2 PC ..please see if you can tell us/post the results of the following command

ifconfig

Also see if you can ping a particular address and tell us what it says ( for example without quotes type "ping www.amazon.com" allow around 3 to 5 lines and then press and hold ctrl and press z to stop it.

If needs be, take a reasonably decent picture of the LM 20.2' PC's screen with your camera/cell phone's camera and upload that picture in here using whatever device you use so far to communicate with us.

Ok..now try pinging the ip address in numerical format and see if the results are different... IF it works...that makes me curious of whatever deals with the DNS is part of the problem as it serves as a words=to-numbers and back to words to numbers deal.

Ok I got the same thing

when I pinged www.amazon.com ... though...I got this

Code: Select all

PING d3ag4hukkh62yn.cloudfront.net (13.226.180.39) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from server-13-226-180-39.dfw55.r.cloudfront.net (13.226.180.39): icmp_seq=1 ttl=228 time=42.1 ms
64 bytes from server-13-226-180-39.dfw55.r.cloudfront.net (13.226.180.39): icmp_seq=2 ttl=228 time=41.6 ms
64 bytes from server-13-226-180-39.dfw55.r.cloudfront.net (13.226.180.39): icmp_seq=3 ttl=228 time=42.2 ms
64 bytes from server-13-226-180-39.dfw55.r.cloudfront.net (13.226.180.39): icmp_seq=4 ttl=228 time=43.2 ms
Not rubbing it in, but I'm only showing you so you'll have a reasonable idea of how it should look if things are working correctly.

I am unable to post the results of the inxi since my Linux does not have internet connectivity, after trying a bit. I will watch this forum to see if others get a similar case solved.

Thanks.

Maybe you can get a temporary connection with your cell phone to post the inxi:

sounds like your DNS server settings has gone AWOL,

tried to check mine google said to type in a terminal window:
cat /etc/resolve.conf

.. but looks like DNS is handled different now, typing in
resolvectl status

should list up some ip adresses at the end - looks like this here , this is adresses from my ISP , assigned by my router:

Code: Select all

Link 2 (wlp1s0)
      Current Scopes: DNS
DefaultRoute setting: yes
       LLMNR setting: yes
MulticastDNS setting: no
  DNSOverTLS setting: no
      DNSSEC setting: no
    DNSSEC supported: no
  Current DNS Server: 2001:4600:4:fff::253
         DNS Servers: xxx.122.16.253
                      xxx.122.164.253
                      2001:4600:4:fff::253
                      2001:4600:4:1fff::253
          DNS Domain: ~.

Thanks for the help. The link for how to connect through a cell phone may be very helpful in the future to help me post the info you need.

Got support from the VPN that I had, They sent a command line ending in ks --off, that apparently turned off the kill switch, and now I can connect even though I deleted that program when I lost connectivity.
