<SOLVED> Wifi card not found

Post by gabbo »

Hi,
I just bought a new PC (Acer Aspire 7) and I'm trying to install Linux Mint 20.2.
However, when boot from the live USB the wifi card is not found.
Is there a way to fix this before the installation?
Otherwise, how can I do it afterwards?

Here there are the outputs regarding the laptop:

Code: Select all

Disable secure boot in Bios & see if that helps.

I removed secure boot, but the problem persists.

Here are the outputs of the same two commands as before:

I've noticed that the "Fast boot" option is enabled. Could it be a part of the problem?
Otherwise I think I need to get the correct drivers, but I'm not sure how..

Thanks!

Yes, disable Fast Boot also. If that doesn't help, you may need a higher kernel. Which kernel do you have now? Check:

Code: Select all

 uname -r

Disabled, but the issue is still there.

As I'm just using the live usb Linux Mint 20.2 image the kernel is: 5.4.0-74-generic

I was hoping to be able to fix this problem before the actual installation, but I guess that I have to install it and then update the kernel.
Do you have any suggestions about this procedure?

Thanks!

You can try a live session of Mint Edge that comes with the 5.11 kernel. But, that kernel may not be new enough either: https://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=291

Ok thanks. I'm downloading it and I'll test it as soon as I can.
Hopefully this will fix the problem

Nothing. The problem is still there with the Edge version and the 5.11 kernel.
I also noticed that while the Bluetooth applet shows the bluetooth as on by default it is not able to find any devices and just keeps looking for devices.

Using Windows I saw that the wifi module is the mediatek wifi 6 mt7921 and looking online I found this answer:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1346617 ... -bluetooth

So, in short, it seems that I have to install the 5.12 kernel.
Do you think is better if I install the standard Linux Mint and then upgrade the kernel through the software upgrade or start already with the Edge version and then upgrade from there?

As always, thanks.

You could do that, but even a newer kernel may not help. Your hardware might be too new for linux right now. So, you can either try a newer kernel: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... t.html#ID8

Or, get a usb wifi adapter that works out of the box on linux.

I edited the answer at the same time you posted your reply haha.
As you can see in the post above it seems that the 5.12 kernel might do the trick (hopefully)

Do you have 7921 or 7961? From what you posted it looks like 7961 to me:

04:00.0 Network controller: MEDIATEK Corp. Device 7961

Anyway, the 5.12 kernel isn't available directly from Mint right now, far as I know. You might get it at the link I posted. 5.12 might work for you, might not.

By checking the "Computer Management" (the name might be a bit different as I'm translating it on the fly) on Win 10 I read MT7921.
Hopefully it will work.
Thanks for the help!

All you can do is try. If the 5.12 doesn't do it, maybe the 5.13. Let us know.

I added the PPA following the link you shared (https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... t.html#ID8) and I installed the 5.13 kernel from the update manager.
This solved the wifi issue.

P.S.: for someone else with this problem it might be useful to remember that in case an Ethernet cable is not available one could obtain internet on a wifi-less laptop using the USB tethering from the phone

Good to hear. I had a feeling you might need to go with the 5.13.
