WIFI and Ethernet both very slow

Post by Cosmic Downpour »

Both my ethernet and wifi are being very slow, and it's only happening on my linux mint desktop.
I know it's not the router or modem as I have plenty of other devices on the network running just fine, including a windows laptop and my android phone on wifi, and my roommates windwows 10 computer plugged into the same ethernet. I'm using google mesh modules to run wifi and ethernet room to room, but again, I'm only experiencing issues with my linux mint installation, and only recently. I tried

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
, and that didn't fix it, I tried multiple re-boots and that didn't fix it. The ethernet is run through my motherboards onboard chipset and i/o, and for testing wifi I used a usb wifi dongle that was sitting in a drawer. Both ethernet and wifi have the same slow results when performing interntet speed test, I made sure to try them one at a time (ethernet off and unplugged for wifi, wifi module removed when testing ethernet), and most pages are so slow they timed out. I actually had

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
fail the second time I tried running it because it timed out. I'm not sure what to try next.

Here's my system info

Code: Select all

Hoping I can get this figured out soon. I love linux mint, and I recently switched to it as my primary desktop OS, becasuse I was fed up with windows 10, and there's no way in hell I'd put up with windows 11. I've considered dual booting windows 10 for some things, but I haven't really need to for any reason yet.
Steam proton is great for gaming, and most other things I use either have a linux version, or a similar caliber linux alternative.

Re: WIFI and Ethernet both very slow

Post by Larry78723 »

I don't even see a wifi adapter in your system report. You might want to try the 5.11 kernel available thru Update Manager -> View -> Linux Kernels. Select 5.11 in the left column then the top kernel in the right column. An install button will appear, click on it and when it's done, reboot.

I only briefly plugged it in earlier on to see if I could isolate the problem to Ethernet, but it seemed like it was both forms of networking that were slow.

The problem seems to have since fluctuated, resolving itself and popping back up intermittently, and I have no idea what's causing it.

I have some suspicions of my router, but I can't be sure.
