[Solved] Correct driver installed, but still no wireless option in the network taskbar icon.

Post by jewbb »

Greetings -
I am new to linux and I'm having a bit of trouble getting connected with my wifi adapter. I have downloaded the driver with the driver manager, but I still can only see the "wired" option in the menu of the network icon located on the taskbar. It also says "Realtek .... ethernet controller unplugged," but that is not the correct usb device. I know you guys are volunteers, so I humbly ask for some help and I greatly appreciate any assistance you can give! :)

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, the links on that page that are relevant to me lead to 404 errors.
Also, the command "iw dev" from step one on the main page does not return anything for me :(

You did get past the 9 links at the beginning? The commands are further down the page...

Yes, @donten. I tried running the firs command further down the page and it returned nothing unfortunately. all subsequent commands on the page depended on the success of command one :(

Get a temporary connection like this: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... ernet.html
Then, try this, one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install git dkms
git clone https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8812au.git
cd rtl8812au
sudo make dkms_install
Reboot

What did the "iw dev" return? Below is an example of its use and result.

Code: Select all

root@kali:~# iw dev
phy#1
    Interface wlan0
        ifindex 4
        type managed
root@kali:~#

Are you sure you have a wifi interface?
What does this show?

Code: Select all

sudo ip link show

If

Code: Select all

iw dev
shows nothing...The system says it doesn't exist. Is it on the mobo? Or is it an external adapter, ie, usb?

Glad it worked for you. :) Just so you know, you needed a different driver than you had before.
