Loss of Network after 2 or more hours

Post by LFengineer »

When the computer is on for more than 2 hours the network connection drops. This is usually with a wired ethernet connection through a Thunderbolt (USB C) dock. When the network connection drops the WiFi will not respond as well, the network connection will not reset through the GUI or command line and sometimes the whole machine locks up. This also effect a Win10 virtual machine which then also drops network connection, although not necessarily at the same time. The computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad Extreme X1 Gen2 with a Lenovo dock. I have this issue on 2 of the same computers and same dock. This started after a system update on 10/18, so I am thinking of restoring a Timeshift from before that update. Before I do that I would like to solve this without doing the Timeshift restore. I have also ruled out external hardware issues (dock, ethernet cables, usb C cable, and router settings). I have also updated the firmware on this machine with fwupd. A reboot typically solves this issue for a number of hours but then it does reappear.

Also, when this issue occurs, a normal reboot/shutdown does not work and the power button must be pressed for a complete shutdown. Pressing escape during this shows the system reaches power off state but there is a 'hang' with r8152 which is the USB network driver. A search for issues with this driver resulted in a mixed bag.

Try updating your kernel to 5.4.0-89. If the -89 is no help, you could try the 5.11 on that newer machine.

I updated the kernel to 5.4-89 and the issue still persists. I then updated to kernel 5.11 and still have this issue.

Any other suggestions?

I'm afraid not. Timeshift may be your answer unless someone else responds.
