Can't turn on WiFi -- it's inactive

Post by vladlen »

  • I've installed Linux Mint on Dell Inspiron 3542 laptop. Everything works fine except WiFi.
  • The device is Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01). I cannot turn on WiFi. Its button is inactive.
  • I have tried a lot of advises over the Internet... Nothing changed. Now I have Internet access only via wired connection. So the laptop became importable.
  • I've googled a lot such as 'Linux wifi broadcom does not work' and so on and tried a lot of things but it's still inactive...
  • I have a TP-Link USB WiFi adapter but it does not work too. I tried to install the adapter using the recommendations on the site https://ostechnix.com/install-tp-link-a ... -in-linux/. I also did not succeed.
  • I have downloaded an archive with kind of driver from the official Broadcom site, ran make makefile but there were errors in C code when building.
  • I've made all the advises on the site https://forum.linuxconfig.org/t/broadco ... rking/1887. Installed, reinstalled -- nothing changed.
  • Driver Manager in Linux Mint suggested me to use the proprietary Broadcom driver. I agreed but it did not changed the situation. Now I chose 'Do not use this device' and it disappeared from the manager.
  • Some time ago there was Win10 installed on this laptop. And WiFi did not work there as well. I also could not turn on WiFi. This OS usually installed updates with WiFi driver and after that this module got inactive.
  • It seems there is something 'bad' installed that makes enabling WiFi inactive.

Without some technical information, we can’t help you. Please post an inxi -Fxpmzr report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and how Mint sees it per  How to get help .

Here is how to generate the report and post it:

Boot from your installation media (USB/DVD)
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Copy the following code and paste into the terminal (Ctrl-Shft-V) then hit Enter/Return:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
exactly as it has been typed here.

Go to Edit, Select All, and then Copy, come back here, click on reply then code tags, </>, and then paste.
The results will help us to help you.

If you have found the solution to your initial post, please open your original post, click on the pencil, and add (Solved) to the Subject, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

So I boot from USB drive and made all the actions:

Code: Select all

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

I think you might need the wl driver. What does this show:

Code: Select all

 lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net && rfkill list && mokutil --sb-state

If you are on the USB ISO, go to the Driver Manager and install the Broadcom Proprietary driver and see if the wifi starts working

Here is the output. Is it okay that I made it in my home profile instead of booting from USB?

The wifi is hard blocked. Does Fn & PrtScr turn it on?

No, Fn + PrtScr does not change anything. And I have just remembered on the previous OS's, it was a problem with WiFi switcher driver. In my OP, I mentioned some years ago this laptop had Win10 and it automatically, with updates, downloaded this strange driver and after that I could not turn on WiFi -- the switcher was inactive as it is now. Neither keyboard buttons (Fn+PrtScr), nor OS interface switcher could help. I used to remove the newly installed switcher driver, then reboot and for some time it worked. Until the next update would install again the driver and the problem would repeat... Before Linux Mint, I installed Lubuntu -- the problem was the same. Is it possible to get a list of used drivers to look for the 'bad' WiFi switcher driver? Maybe it is the reason?

I boot from USB, opened the Driver Manager and installed the driver. After that I looked at network connection and it was said WiFi was blocked (or disabled) by hardware. But Fn+PrtScr does not make any effect. In the previous post I remembered there was a problem with the WiFi switcher driver.

Also I have run the wireless script. The output is

Code: Select all

See if you can reset Bios to defaults, that sometimes removes a hard block.

I have just reset Bios to defaults, saved settings, reboot -- and WiFi works! Right now I am using WiFi, the wire is plugged off. Thank you and other people who made comments here. The problem is solved. Hope it will work further. :)

Ok, good. There was a soft block too, so let's see if that is gone. Post:

Yes, now I remember there was a problem with Airplane mode switcher driver. And on Win10, I regularly used to remove it. I did not like this OS and the annoying problem with the switch driver turned out the last drop... Right now I have WiFi. I do hope it won't broke.
