Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect. SOLVED!
Installing Wifi Adapter Volans VL-UW190 with RealTek software.
I have the cd for RTL8814 Driver which allows me access to the Linux version RTL88xx2BU_WiFi_Linux...2COEX20171012-5044 folder which then gives me access to install.sh. Because I am completely green to Linux I was very glad to read that I could simply “run” install.sh to connect my adapter to the internet.
So I then copied/pasted this “install.sh” file into “Terminal” as a “file name” and hit return. I got a “Permission Denied” message and then discovered another “install.sh” file in a different folder called “Wifi_Direct_User_Interface” which I then entered into “Terminal” but also got the same error message. As this was supposed to be the easy install method I am now at a complete loss as to what next? Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect.
Assuming that's the correct driver, try this one line at a time:
Reboot
Code: Select all
sudo apt install git dkms
git clone https://github.com/cilynx/rtl88x2bu.git
sudo dkms add ./rtl88x2bu
sudo dkms install rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1

Re: Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect.
The commands referenced in the other posts require an internet connections. Seeing the terminal outputs it appears you do not have one.argusstuft wrote: ⤴Wed Dec 08, 2021 4:25 pm Installing Wifi Adapter Volans VL-UW190 with RealTek software.
Unless you have an Ethernet port that works then I suggest falling back to the original install media. Pop the CD into the drive and copy all of the contents to a folder on your computer. Does not matter where, so long as you know where it is. Go into that folder where you see the install.sh file, right click on an empty space in that folder and click "open in terminal".
When terminal opens type "./install.sh" wothout the quotes. Should ask you for your password, but if it fails with access denied or other error message then type"sudo ./install.sh" again without the quotes.

./install.sh

I'm not convinced,

is what you get when you open a terminal booting from the mint install iso. If your desktop looks like this, you have not installed mint, note the prompt in the terminal window:

G'day AndyMH, If I don't have an installed Mint on my SSD then why can I save files etc that couldn't be saved when all I had was a "Live Session"? I have one of the supplied pictures as a background and been able to save a document or two. And my desktop does look like your example!

G'day AndyMH,
I probably should have said that my desktop looks exactly like your posted shot including the icon to install Linux. And during the installation process I do not recall making any changes such as renaming the computer and most likely would not have done so without good reason. Thanks again for your input in what is fast becoming a real hassle!

Re: Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect.
Then I don't what you did to install mint, but whatever it was you didn't do it properly. You need to burn the mint install iso to a stick, in win you can use rufus, but as you have a copy of mint you can run, you can use mint's usb image writer.argusstuft wrote: ⤴Mon Dec 13, 2021 6:58 pm G'day AndyMH,

Boot from the stick you just burnt and double click on the install icon. You get various choices, but probably best you choose 'erase and install'. Make sure you select your usb ssd. You might have a problem - don't know what filesystems you have put on the ssd. If so report back.
You might find that your wifi problems disappear or the suggestions made previously to install the driver will work.

G'day AndyMH, From memory when I installed I used the same USB device that the live session was on and from what I understand now you are saying that I need to install to another device from where any live session is located? Just want clarification before I attempt this next move, and thanks again for your help!

Yes, burn the iso to a usb stick/flash drive and boot from it. Install mint to your usb connected ssd.need to install to another device from where any live session is located?

Re: Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect.
G'day AndyMH, I tried your suggestion a couple of times varying the Wipe disk and install with the "something else" option and got as far as "Who are you" and then the process stalled with "The attempt to mount a file system with type vfat in SCSI1(0,0,0) partition #1 (SDA) at /boot/efi failed." "You may resume partitioning from the partitioning menu" Making another approach I then began the process over again while using an older laptop with an I3 Intel, 4GB ram, Win 10, 500GB HDD and only USB 2 sockets that has been idle for some time. During this process I was easily able to connect to the internet and saw other things such as setting the time zone. However the whole process again terminated at the "Who are you?" step, again with the same message.
I must also report that attempts were made using USB sticks that were USB 2 and USB 3 as the holders of the iso image. I was getting hopeful with the laptop, but to no avail! Also I think that the SDA referred to was in each case the media where the image was located, not the destination which usually showed as SDE. Where to next?

Re: Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect.
Hi argusstuft,
I stopped by to see what was going on and happened to read this thread. I must admit that I cringed a few times. Let me see if I can post some information that will help.
In reading the thread, I did not see where the specific chipset in your usb wifi adapter was nailed down. That is extremely important.
Go to the following site:
https://github.com/morrownr/88x2bu-20210702
Open the file called:
supported-device-IDs
Read and follow the instructions so as to determine the device ID of your adapter. If you find your device ID in that repo then follow the instructions in the README (main page).
If you find that is not the right driver then...
https://github.com/morrownr/8812au-20210629
https://github.com/morrownr/8821au-20210708
...there are more repos at github.com/morrownr if you need to keep looking.
If you find your level of frustration with Realtek based adapters has reached its limit:
https://github.com/morrownr/USB-WiFi
That site provided a lot of information about USB WiFi adapters for Linux in general and I test many on Linux Mint. There are many links to specific adapters and these adapters are plug and play as they use in-kernel drivers. Just imagine not having to hunt down and install a Realtek driver.
Let me know how it goes.
Nick
P.S. Rule of thumb: NEVER install a REALTEK USB WiFi driver from a CD. It will likely not work and it may make a mess of your system.

Re: Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect.
G'day morrownr, thanks for your very welcome input here. After reading through your suggested "supported device id's" and returning a blank (and a lot of that is due to tiredness today!!!) I got the chipset details from the Volans web-site and accordingly they list Realtek 8814AU as being fitted to my adapter. They also can supply for download the Driver software which may/may not be more recent than the included version on the CD, so will get that. My frustration stems from having to get a new adapter (Netgear) a few months ago when Linux wasn't being considered as a possibility and then finding that it had no support for Linux and having to replace that with the current item. In my ignorance I didn't do as much research as It now appears that I should have done? I don't recall any reference to what chipset/driver was being used in my latest purchase anyway and would not have known there was a difference!
Re: Can't get my Linux supported adapter to connect.
Try this for 8814au, one line at a time:
Reboot
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install git build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
git clone https://github.com/aircrack-ng/rtl8814au.git
cd rtl8814au
make

I've been using Linux for over 25 years and I have seen your story many times since we started using wifi adapters. I started a site just to help with the core problem here:

The core problem is a lack of readily available information. As you have time, please go to the above site and read about USB-WiFi. Most Linux users do not know about the many really good adapters that are available and work with in-kernel drivers. To install these adapters on a modern Linux distro such as Linux Mint 20.x, all you have to do is plug the adapter in. That's it. These adapters are plug and play. They will work on Windows also if you run any Windows machines. They come in speeds from N150 to AC1300.
Now, for the short term, I also have a driver up for the 8814au:

You will need to clean out any old drivers you have installed prior to installation. You can ask questions over in the repo shown above.
