5GHz WiFi band of AX200 is too slow

Post by imusorka »

There is an issue with the 5GHz WiFi band of the network card in my laptop. It's actually slower than 2.4GHz. This issue is not present in Windows.

Code: Select all

Network:
 Device-2: Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 driver: iwlwifi v: kernel port: e000
 bus ID: 04:00.0
IF: wlp4s0 state: up mac: <filter>

Because the iwlwifi driver changes with kernel versions, it is really best to provide us with more information about your hardware.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

If I thought those were the only relevant details, I would have only requested just that information. Please supply the requested inxi output which happens to be the exact same output described in Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help!.

How is the remaining hardware relevant? If you are referring to repos, the output on them is below.

You have provided no information at all as to what computer make and model you have. However, that is your choice not to do so. I would recommend you search about your laptop model to see if others with the same or similar model are also having an issue of this type.

As it is your choice not to provide the requested info, it is also my choice to spend time helping those who do provide the requested info. Good luck resolving your issue.

My laptop is custom built and I wouldn't even be wasting anyone's time here if I'd found a solution online. There are no OEM Linux drivers to resolve this issue.

I am aware PC Specialist and others make custom laptops using Tongfang as the manufacturer. Tuxedo also uses Tongfang. If you do a search on "Tongfang" or "Tong fang" on this forum you will come up with a lot of hits.

Your wireless card is an Intel product. Intel makes the drivers which go into the kernel. You will get a version of the "OEM Linux driver" from the kernel. However, I do not know if the Tongfang may have done anything special related to the card which might be a factor in this situation.

It's a Tongfang chassis indeed and looks like they messed up the compatibility in the process. I haven't found a solution anywhere online. My Intel drivers are current.

Howdy, I myself had issues on my Tuxedo Infinity Book 14 Gen6 with same card, it simply after some (longer) time on WiFi disconnected, went nutz and so on (along with bluetooth). Hence, I simply killed n feature (this may be disappointing to you), but since then wifi works just fine for me:

Code: Select all

cstamas@Infinity:~$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
# options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 swcrypto=1
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

# /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
# iwlwifi will dyamically load either iwldvm or iwlmvm depending on the
# microcode file installed on the system. When removing iwlwifi, first
# remove the iwl?vm module and then iwlwifi.
remove iwlwifi \
(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \
&& /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211
cstamas@Infinity:~$
(note: first two lines are of interest, rest were present already in this file. Somewhere I read about swcrypto but it did not help me, so I used only 11n_disable=1)

Setting it to 1 or 8 actually makes 5GHz slower (~15 Mbps) than it already was (~50 Mbps). Are you getting your full broadband speed? Mine is 1 Gbps, which works just fine in Windows. Am I missing another trick here?

Do you have separate entries in network manager for 2.4 & 5 Ghz? If so, open Network Settings, click on the gear for the 5Ghz connection, set Band to A, not automatic, then select a channel other than default. You may have to repeat the channel selection until you find one that works best for you.

It refuses to connect when I select any channel other than default. Interestingly, upload on default is 3x faster than download.

I've lost ability to connect over wireless altogether. Relevant entries still appear under Network Connections. No Wireless section in
Network Settings though. I'm on the 5.14.0-1022-oem kernel.

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Ethernet stops working after a while too. It does work much longer than on the regular kernels (~30 vs 5 minutes).

WiFi is back after disabling fast boot in Windows. WiFi 6 still doesn't work correctly although upload is faster.
