[SOLVED] Can't connect to network drives LM20.3 Acer Aspire One
Recently installed LM20.3 on Acer Aspire 1 notebook. Previously I was using LM18.3 on an intel desktop and able to connect to network drives including a WD TV Live media player. The WD TV player and other W10 PCs and my router storage all showed in the file manager under networking.
In 20.3 the drives and WD TV player only show in file manager RH side screen as rectangles and give following error when selected.
Unable to mount location failed to receive share list from server.
These same resources connected automatically when I was using LM18.3 so not sure what changed in 20.3.
If anyone has successfully connected a Aspire one to a hard wired WDTV box on a home wireless/ethernet network could you tell me what I need to do to get the thing set up.
I did try switching the notebook from wifi to ethernet with the same (non) result.
I posted a similar question in beginners a few days ago but only got one suggestion. ( viewtopic.php?p=2125012#p2125012 )
Thank you.

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
Stab in the dark, but it's the "allowed" SMB versions differing between the LM 20 machine, and the other named hardware (e.g. LM 20 defaults to SMBv3 ONLY; might be the affected machines are v2).
I believe this is handled in

/etc/samba/smbclient.conf

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
Well the box I'd really like to connect to is the WD media player from the late XP era. Not sure what the samba stuff is about but if that means something needs installing on a unsupported WD box it ain't going to happen. I'm really thinking of firing up 18.3 on my old Intel celeron ( homebrew) using its one good HD and seeing if that will bridge between Lm20 and the WD box. It's either that or back to using a usb thumbdrive to move files.
I hate it when progress breaks stuff.

Here's a thought. Anybody know if I can install 18.3 alongside 20.3 on the notebook and just use the old version for file transfer.

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
Seems overly complicated to me. Have you tried to connect via ip address?

Did you read the link I posted?Portisheadradio wrote: ⤴Fri Jan 21, 2022 2:41 pm Here's a thought. Anybody know if I can install 18.3 alongside 20.3 on the notebook and just use the old version for file transfer.
You said
And if you read the link, altair4 (our guru on all things samba/cifs) says explicitly:failed to receive share list from server
and then tells you how to fix it.You will get a Failed to retrieve share list from server
Edit /etc/samba/smb.conf and right under the workgroup = WORKGROUP line add these:
Code: Select all
client min protocol = NT1
server min protocol = NT1
Progress in this case is security concerns about SMB1, which is why it is no longer supported 'out of the box' with LM20. Unfortunately there are still a lot of old devices out there that insist on SMB1.I hate it when progress breaks stuff.

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
That link didn't work for me but will try and figure out what samba is. Right now I don't have a clue what it is apart from being some kind of network protocol and only 'tinker' with stuff as a last resort. I was happy that 18 worked out of the box and sad that 20 doesn't.
Seems odd that my old hp photosmart works fine over the lan yet I cant see my w10 PCs.
Understand that a lot of you like the challenge of these kinds of intracacies but at my time of life I'd just like the results even if I don't fully understand how they happened.
Thanks again.

Please post the output of the following command:
If it provides no output or results in an error post the output of this command:
Code: Select all
testparm -s
Code: Select all
cat /etc/samba/smb.conf

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
Hi samba didn't restart after the restart command.
I ran the edit command and undid the changes and did a timeshift to a point prior to the changes.
Willing to try the changes again tomorrow. Getting late right now

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
Okay this means your LM isn't running the samba server. That's not a big deal -- it just means that your LM machine cannot share files on the windows network. This is perfectly fine, and having only one machine "hosting" the files is usually the overall easiest approach.Portisheadradio wrote: ⤴Tue Jan 25, 2022 2:14 am Hi samba didn't restart after the restart command.

The samba client configuration file is (at least as I recall anyway)
/etc/samba/smbclient.conf
. You can set the minimum version in there instead.Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
Don't take such drastic actions when you do something with samba. Do what I suggested above just don't restart smbd:Hi samba didn't restart after the restart command.

Please stop posting that. Samba - at least in this forum - is hard enough for most users to understand without this kind of misinformation.

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
Didn't seem to change anything still saw the unable to mount error for the 2 nw locations that showed.
Tried to rt click and share a folder on this pc and it said samba wasn't installed and it isn't.
Should I install it?

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
If you 'share this folder' and then 'create share' mint will install samba for you.

Re: Can't connect to network drives LM20.3
I'd asked if I needed samba installed because it's apparently not installed as a default.
I have the 20.3 firewall turned on set to 'home'.
Also I'd have no problem trying to connect by ip address but how would I do that in linux 20?
Heres a picture of the network. The 18.3 pc was able to send files to the WD player and delete them after use. It could also create directories on the WD USB storage, connect to the w10 PCs and send and delete files on the router storage usb.
20.3 won't do anything like this because of some built in security thing.
Thanks to all.

If you know the ip address of the WD Media Box:
Open a terminal, run this command to get a list of shares, and post whatever the result is back to the forum:
Change 192.168.0.100 to the correct ip address of the WD Media Box
Open a terminal, run this command to get a list of shares, and post whatever the result is back to the forum:
Code: Select all
smbclient -L 192.168.0.100
