[solved] iwlwifi not loaded anymore on boot

Post by undersound »

Hi,

Wifi stopped working suddenly. When I power on and boot no wifi interface is detected.
After logging in and manually running modprobe iwlwifi wifi comes up again.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Hello, undersound.

Did the wifi adapter work in the past, e.g. when your system still had a previous kernel like e.g. 4.15.0-176?
Does the wifi adapter work if you boot a previous kernel like e.g. 4.15.0-176?

Regards,
Karl

Hi Karl,

Thanks for your suggestion. I loaded with the previous kernel and it works! What's the best way to proceed now?
I would prefer loading this kernel by default for now.

Hello, undersound.

It is good that booting to the previous kernel 4.15.0-176 resolves the wifi issue.

While your system is running on kernel 4.15.0-176, launch Update Manager, go to View => Linux Kernel. Select kernel 4.15.0-177 and click on [Remove]. This will uninstall kernel 4.15.0-177.
As a consequence K4.15.0-176 will be on top of the Grub menu again and will be booted automatically.

Update Manager will offer kernel 4.15.0-177 again as an available kernel update to you. Mark it and select to blacklist it, so that it will be no longer listed and so that you will not re-install it by accident potentially.

If you are lucky, the underlying bug(s) in K4.15.0-177 will be resolved in K4.15.0-180.
There seem to be a number of bugs or regressions in K4.15.0-177. In a similar thread I found a minimum of 3 Ubuntu Launchpad bug reports about kernel 4.15.0-177. Just for our reference, in case you are interested: > here <. Else ignore the linked post and the Launchpad bug reports.

Regards,
Karl

P.S.:
The next kernel after K4.15.0-177, which seems to cause various kinds of problems depending on the specific hardware, is K4.15.0-180, not 4.145.0-178 as I had wildly guessed. Plus K4.15.0-180 may not resolve the problems introduced in K4.15.0-177 at all, it seems. Cf. > that post <.

Hey Kariachen,

Thanks for the information on the kernel issues and the clear instruction on how to set a default.
