Further info: I have installed LINUXMINT 21 three times because of the many beginners errors I have made. On the second install WiFi worked. I thought it was built in and discovered that the command wl did the trick. After a third install that no longer works despite multiple searches and application of many different commands.

The above is an extract after running this again sudo inxi -Fxxxrz && rfkill list && iwconfig && mokutil --sb-state
I hope that was the right thing to do. :)

It seems you are still missing a wifi driver. Can you install it in Driver Manager?

If not, check in Bios for secure boot & disable it.

I suspect then you may need to disable secure boot in Bios.

If you also have Windows on that machine, disable Fast Startup in Win.

No longer any Windows on this machine. I swapped the BIOS to Legacy Mode and re-installed from the .iso I have on a CD, choosing the third option, which I have not done previously. No luck with the WiFi before or after the upgrades to LMint 21issued recently. I can get by without WiFi as Ethernet has worked from the start.

Did you check for secure boot in Bios? I'm not sure if that machine has it, but if it does, it needs to be disabled.

You would find it in the Bios Security tab. If there, you may have to create an Administrator password to disable it.

I did create an Admin password - the magic key to let one in the front door. I disabled Secure Boot and used a Legacy option the last time I tried.

If you are sure secure boot is off now & wifi still isn't working, try this again:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source
Reboot

WiFi is working! On a whim I decided to try downloading the .iso image from a different site. I had been using either of the Australian sites; but went to WORLD LayerOnline. I did that to install Mint 21 on my DELL 3891 which has a BIOS / UEFI which allows "ubuntu" to be installed on a Linux partition. WiFi worked with the LM 21 installation on the DELL, so I gave it a go on the Acer. That worked to give me WiFi on the Acer :) Getting WiFi going on the Acer was different in detail from getting it working on the DELL but without knowing how that happened, both rigs have WiFi. I will be happy to run whatever commands you would like me to run if that will help.
