System stopped detecting Ethernet after restoring with Timeshift.

Post by TwoOhFive »

Hello.
Today I decided to try upgrading to Linux Mint 21, but after I learned it deleted some programs I reverted back to a Timeshift backup to get my stuff back. Unfortunately after doing this, my computer stopped detecting ethernet connections. I'm using the latest kernel. Strangely enough, I can connect to Wi-fi. But that's all I can do. I also tried restarting, to no avail.

I think this may help as well. This is the output of inxi -Fxxxrz

I tried going into driver manager, and it says everything is up to date. Going into System Settings, then to Network shows no Ethernet option at all. I tried a couple of commands from other threads hoping it would solve my issue. The first command I tried is this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall network-manager
This didn't do anything to fix my issue.
The second command I tried was this:

Code: Select all

sudo dhclient eth0
The terminal responded with this:

Code: Select all

Cannot find device "eth0"
I'm 100% certain that the cable is good, as I connected it to another computer and it connected right away. Linux Mint just does not seem to see the Ethernet connection.

Thanks.

The latest kernel of Mint 20.3 or 21?

It might help to post the entire:

The driver is there:

Device-2: Intel vendor: ASUSTeK driver: igc v: kernel port: N/A
bus ID: 05:00.0 chip ID: 8086:15f3
IF: enp5s0 state: down mac: <filter>

Did you try reinserting the ethernet cable? You can also try:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r igc && sudo modprobe igc && sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service

Hello. I've tried reinserting the network cable, but that didn't help me.
I executed the command you gave, but it didn't seem to help me much. Still unable to connect using Ethernet.

Can you enable it In your panel on the lower right when you click the network icon?

Also, try:

Code: Select all

 sudo ifconfig enp5s0 up

The only option I see when I click on the network icon is to turn off/on wireless network, and to go into network settings and network connections.
Also, I tried that command you gave, and from what I can tell it didn't seem to do anything at all.

I had a similar problem in using timeshift to recover 20.3 after a failed upgrade to 21 (due to a hardware fault) and I found out that that timeshift had not restored the previous versions of two network related files:
/usr/lib/systemd/system-generators/netplan
and
/usr/lib/netplan/generate
I manually copied them back from the snapshot and that fixed my problem of getting a working 20.3 system back with Ethernet connection. The upgrade went successfully after that.

I have the same issue. Updated to 21, fractional scaling didn't work anymore, so i reverted back via Timeshift.

That went well except for the ethernet issue. I've tryed 3 different kernels, same thing. Does not detect connection. Unfortunately i don't have wi-fi on this pc so i'm stuck.

Would really appreciate some tips.

-I've tryed what @keithf mentioned, but those files are fine on my pc.

They are not fine, replace them with your backup files this is the issue, Timeshift is not restoring those files correctly. It worked for me I am linking keithf's post to my thread as solution because it is the current issue.

What I'd like to know for future reference is how to manually add and enable our Ethernet connection because it seems ridiculous that no one on this whole forum knows how to do something that simple on Linux Mint lol. If we had no previous back up files how do we just add and enable our ethernet connection if it gets messed up? This shouldn't be this hard...

I did replace those files from the last snapshot. It didn't work.
I have a usb-wireless adapter now and wireless connection works fine.

I also experienced this issue, I can confirm that replacing those files fixes the issue.

It appears the copy correctly, exact same metadata and size. For whatever reason overwriting them from backup fixes the issue.

Thanks to all for the help here; I had the same issue with ethernet, and re-copying the 2 files shown earlier in this thread solved my problem. I had tried the mintupdate tool, went through the laborious removal of several orphan PPAs, but when Synaptics then confronted me with conflicts I gave up. On using TimeShift to return to 20.3, I then noted the above problems with no ethernet recognition, and a netplan error on boot.

Like a previous post, TimeShitf DID "restore" the two files in systemd, and their date/time/size profiles looked identical, but you should copy from the backup manually anyway (I did not do a file compare between the TimeShift files and what it put on my machine on restore; perhaps should have done this). I'd also like to point out that the one file is a link to another, hence both have to be reinstated. Makes me wonder how many other links weren't restored properly by TimeShift.

I had the same issue.
I am just seeing this post for the first time, after a fix i found here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/71159/n ... ot-managed

ill copy the relevant bits:
Ubuntu installs a config file that sets most devices unmanaged:
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf:
[keyfile]
unmanaged-devices=*,except:type:wifi,except:type:gsm,except:type:cdma

To disable this, You can create a blank file with the same name in /etc:

sudo touch /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf
and then:
sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager

Hi there!

Please, greet me warm in your club. Same story: upgraded to 21, then for a reason restored from Timeshift snapshot and got networking failure (wired, not wireless). Both solutions mentioned here fix the issue. But for me I decided to go with copying *lib* files just because I feel it more correct since '10-globally...' file wasn't there and everything worked fine.

Thank you all for your curiosity and for sharing your findings. But there are two questions I still aware of:
1) Just curious: how all this connected. I just like things to be more clear. I mean those libs and files and what the heck is going on under the hood
2) Even more important: what else TimeShift makes wrong? Was any other files broken? How can we trust this tool in future?

Updated: I found VirtualBox doesn't start saying libssl.so3 is missing. Reinstalled both Virtualbox and libssl (apt get install --reinstall) and now it's okay. What next will pop up? Fell's bad.

PS Sorry for English, I'm not a native speaker

Welcome to the forum, KirK86.

A bug report Ethernet not working after restoring with Timeshift: netplan files are failed to be restored #51 has been created. This problem has happened to many people, but it seems that not many have reported it.

I am not aware of other Timeshift snapshot problems when upgrading to LM21.
