DNS connectivity problem, Mint 21

Post by Parm6 »

Mint 21 was working fine until today when I can ping 8.8.8.8 ethernet/wireless but not google.com. I also can't update the system as apt can't find the repo. It is definitely a Mint issue because another distro on the same machine works fine.

I'm guessing the problem is with the DNS server settings. How do I change them?

Thanks

I seriously doubt so.
Reason: The most recent Linux Mint version is 21.

Please, provide your Linux Mint System Information as has been explained step by step in this post: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=318644

Hello, Parm6.

It would be still much appreciated, if you provided your System Information for your Mint 21 system.

Also, please, share with us what the following 2 terminal commands will display:

Code: Select all

nslookup 8.8.8.8

nslookup dns.google.com
Regards,
Karl

Thank you Karl

I've fixed it now, temporarily at least, by changing the nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf to 8.8.8.8

Hi, Parm6.

You have implemented a workaround by using dns.google.com ( 8.8.8.8 ) as your DNS server.
It might have been helpful to share the output of nslookup 8.8.8.8 and nslookup dns.google.com, while the DNS resolution problem still occurred, and only afterwards implement the workaround.
Without the requested output, now we can only guess what may have been the root cause of your DNS problem.

Karl

I fixed it before seeing the request. If it happens again I'll do that.

It happened again. /etc/resolv.conf was overwritten as:

Code: Select all

# Generated by Eddie v2.21.8 - https://eddie.website - 13 August 2022 13:29:18 UTC

nameserver 10.7.214.1
Eddie is my VPN (AirVPN).

Code: Select all

nslookup dns.google.com
and

Code: Select all

nslookup 8.8.8.8
gave no output.

Changed the nameserver to 8.8.8.8 and it's all working again.

Hello, Parm6.

This is the first time that you mention that you connect to the internet through a VPN.

As I do not know "Eddie", I cannot give any advice, how to check "Eddie's" configuration. Sorry.
But it may be advisible to check the "Eddie" manual pages and/or consult their support team.
