Dropping WiFi connection after some time

Post by minty12 »

Hi,

I have Realtek wifi card with chipset rtl8723be.
It works really well on my Linux Mint 20.3 with Kernel 5.4.0-124-generic - the internet is fast, but after some time, randomly it drops the connection to the internet.
The WiFi icon shows that the laptop is connected to the WiFi, but there is no internet.
When this happens I have to turn off the WiFi, turn it on, and then the internet is working again.

My iwconfig:

Code: Select all

wlp8s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"NETGEAR099"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz
          Bit Rate=72.2 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-14 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:18 Missed beacon:0
My /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf

Code: Select all

options rtl8723be swenc=1 ips=0 swlps=0 fwlps=0 aspm=0 ant_sel=2
I created this file after reading some other posts on this forum - it was not present in my system initially.
I tried changing modprobe settings to use ant_sel=1/2 but after rebooting the issue still occurs.

I think this issue started with some kernel update, when I installed Linux Mint one year ago I did not notice any issues with the internet.

I would really appreciate a help with this.

To start, per Forum rules, kindly post detailed data about your PC hardware and system software.

Plug in all relevant dongles, accessories, and peripherals. Then...
  1. Use the Mint menu system to launch System Reports.
  2. Click on System information there. Your system details appear.
  3. At the bottom-right of that window, click on the [Copy] button.
  4. Your clipboard now contains your PC information text. Open a Reply here, then tap Ctrl-V to paste all the text into it.

Your detailed PC specifications can then be reviewed by others here for diagnostic & remedy suggestions.

Thank you for your responses.
The issue reappered today, internet become very slow to the point of being unusable. After around 45 seconds it returned back to normal withour restarting wifi.
I tried ant_sel=1 and ant_sel=2 and ant_sel=1 is stronger accordingly to

Code: Select all

iwlist scan
My current rtl8723be.conf is as below now:

Code: Select all

options rtl8723be ant_sel=1

You can monitor your wifi signal data in real-time, and while in motion, with the wavemon utility:

Open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) and copy-and-paste the following command...

Code: Select all

sudo apt install wavemon
Run wavemon within a Terminal, as it's purely textual, not graphical. Exit by tapping the Q key.

Perhaps one of these might help, #1.10 or #2.7 here:

The SSID of my WiFi is listed.
I tried point 2.7 - Set the BSSID field to the MAC address of the router but it did not make any difference.
I used wavemon and I can see that the ant_sel=1 looks stronger but I still have issues with internet dropping randomly.
When internet drops randomly it still shows Link Quality=70/70 and Signal level=-4 dBm.

Today I upgraded Minto to the latest version (Vanessa) and the issue still occurs.
Internet become very slow for around 40 seconds and then came back to normal speed (without restarting wifi).
During this time I run iwconfig command and noticed that Invalid misc raised significantly over that time - from around 2000 to 3340.
