If need be, establish temporary internet connection by other means.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- Make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxpmrz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter, and don't omit the space after inxi!)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Do the same with the following four commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lspci

Besides what sleeper12 advised, do also this:

Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel of the 5.15 series. Then reboot.

I have tried this and things look much better thanks. Now I hope I will be able to upgrade to mint 21. the upgrade failed numerous times due to poor wifi performance. will update. thanks a lot.

With the recent Ryzen CPUs, such as you and I have, it's essential to have a sufficiently recent kernel. Otherwise, numerous hardware features may not be fully enabled. Such as wifi, backlight controls, and video hardware acceleration (the Cinnamon DE can be taxing on graphics).

You don't need to do the entire upgrade to Mint 21 -- you can just install a newer kernel (currently 5.15), as follows:

Open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) and copy-and-paste the following line, then tap Enter...

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04-edge
When the installation has completed, restart your PC.

On Mint 20, that command will install the "Edge" kernel, currently 5.15, with Hardware Enablement (HWE) for the newer PC hardware.

For a summary of your PC hardware & system software, enter the following Terminal command: neofetch

To confirm that you now have graphics hardware acceleration, copy-and-paste the following...

Code: Select all

glxinfo -B | grep -i accelerated
The output response should be "Accelerated: yes".

If you still have wifi issues, make sure Secure Boot is disabled in your BIOS, because it's known to interfere with device drivers and firmware. The following Terminal command tells you whether Secure Boot is currently enabled or disabled...

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state

You can get a read on wifi signal strength/quality with the wavemon utility:

Open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T) and copy-and-paste the following command...

Code: Select all

sudo apt install wavemon
Run wavemon within a Terminal, as it's purely textual, not graphical.

You can walk around your home/office with wavemon running on a laptop to check wifi strength/coverage.

Re: very slow wifi

Post by xyznoob »

just so that you all might know, installing mint 21 resolved another annoying problem.

with 20.3, the screen wouldnt turn off even if in power management i set the screen to turn off after 5 minutes. it would go black but would still be on as evidenced by the glow. think of it as a black screensaver.

Now with 21 the screen gets turned off. I think this may be due to better compatibility of mint 21 with new hardware.

Its all super now. wifi is running consistently. alls resolved now.

Good job everyone. 8)
