[SOLVED]Linux Mint 21 can't find the network (Windows 10 does)

Post by IndyDev »

I have a new difficult situation for me. I installed Linux Mint 21 on a Gigabyte 990FX UD3 R5 motherboard with a SanDisk SSD and cannot get the OS to connect to the network (wired connection). Windows 10 machines connect instantaneously to the same network connection. ifconfig shows enp5s0 with no connection (all 0's), so obviously no ping's work (except 127.0.0.1).

Where do I go from here? This is really strange, I have LM 21 on another network (different computer), with no problems at all.

Appreciate any help.

Note: Yes the hardware LED's are correctly blinking showing a connection.

ifconfig output:

lspci output: (relevant section)

Code: Select all

18:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 0c)
From this I can see that the network chip is being detected, but for some reason isn't usable.

To start, per Forum rules, kindly post detailed data about your PC hardware and system software.

Plug in all relevant dongles, accessories, and peripherals. Then ...
  1. Use the Mint menu system to launch System Reports.
  2. Click on System information there. Your system details appear.
  3. At the bottom-right of that window, click on the [Copy] button.
  4. Your clipboard now contains your PC information text. Open a Reply here, then tap Ctrl-V to paste all the text into it.

Your detailed PC specifications can then be reviewed by others here for diagnostic & remedy suggestions.

System Reports only lists items to install. Multimedia etc. But it cannot do this because it cannot access a network.

Tried to install LM 21 again, but no success. Then stumbled onto a solution. Installed Ubuntu 22.04 directly. Bingo. Network worked. So then I installed LM 21, and I have networking. Why this worked I have no idea. But the situation is resolved.

Some subsystems may require a particular initialization, which may put config/status data in non-volatile (permanent or flash) memory.

This is one way, for example, that Windows Fast StartUp can cause grief to Linux on dual-boot systems.

Glad yours worked in favour.

I'm a newbie, and had same problem, the windows 10 network was connecting with Mint 20 but after the update to 21 I got the same network error.

I installed nmap and from the terminal ran

nmap -v -sn -Pn 192.168.1.1 where the address is my router.

This put the system on line and I haven't had the issue since

Hope this is some use
