100 mbps cap? [Solved]

Post by Keith2021 »

My internet speed test is 100mbps but my provider gives me 500mbps but I can't get over 100mbps with a new cat6 cable connected directly to the Spectrum modem, I read that an earlier provider set a cap at 100mbps and that is stopping me from going above 100mbps. Has anyone heard of this? And how would this cap be removed, if a provider only can do it then I'll get back with Spectrum again. Thanks. :)

Are you sure your computer can handle more than 100mb?
Please use terminal command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
to verify that or paste the output here.

Nearly all telco carriers limit Uploads to 10% of your download speeds.
You mention Spectrum: is this a fibre connection, or a Wireless Telco carrier?

I have found that reorienting the Wireless 'Gateway', modem, whatever you want to call it, can help a great deal.

if you have External Antennas, the type, and orientation of those has a lot of effect on your speed capabilities.

Time of Day, also, due to Network Congestion when more people are on the Internet and sharing your local Carrier's tower.

It is extremely difficult to trouble shoot via the internet to solve these problems,
IF,
the problem is external to your equipment.

Here is what I came up with. I don't know if the computer can handle it or not, it is a HP Laptop that we purchased in 2008 that I keep upgrading. In my search they talk about the provider doing the cap on the speed but I am paying for 500mbps so I don't think they would cap it and I have cable with unlimited usage plan. I can call Spectrum but didn't want to if my computer can't handle more than 100mbps.I don't know how to figure out what it can run?

It looks like your ethernet adapter is the bottleneck:
Device-2: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet
vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: r8169 v: kernel port: 3000 bus ID: 02:00.0
IF: eno1 state: up speed: 100 Mbps duplex: full mac: <filter>
The datasheet for that adapter says:
The Realtek RTL8101E Fast Ethernet controller combines an IEEE 802.3 10/100Base-T compliant Media
Access Controller..
From http://realtek.info/pdf/rtl8101e_datasheet_1.2.pdf
Maybe you can replace it with a gigabit network adapter.

My Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet I think it is a 10/100 Mbit so I won't get more than 100Mbit out of my system.
So the Realtek PCI Ethernet won't go faster than 100 Mbps, is that what the 10/100 means?
I found this on Amazon. I will give this a try. It will do 10/100/1000 on a USB 2.0 I still might not get all the speed that they provide but that is life I guess. I do need a new computer.

Yes unfortunately. Maybe the module in your laptop can be replaced with faster one.

Thanks for the replies.
This might not really fix the problem but it might help.I'll post when I get it and do a speed test and let you know if it works. Now I am getting a download speed of 93.71 and an upload of 23.40 these are good speeds for an old laptop but am only running on 1/3 of the throttle.

I had a similar problem with an old laptop, found an Intel WiFi adapter to replace the OEM adapter which was restricted to 2.4g only.

the Intel WiFi adapter supports 5g, and that old laptop became a real speed demon by comparison.

What I ended up doing is getting one of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VSTDFG?ps ... ct_details
My Ethernet card is a 10/100 and this USB adapter will let me do up to 450 Mbps using the USB port. my speed is 300.14 download and 23.37 upload. quite a difference for such an old laptop.
I still might check out an Intel wifi card and see what it does.
