[SOLVED} I have a solid wi-fi connection but Firefox cannot see it.

Post by Jim river »

I have been using this system for years problem free. After some Firefox updates I started to have intermittent connection problems. I could usually get reconnected by the reset button in Network wi-fi and rebooting. That no longer works. If I hit the network icon or check in GUI network the connection is excellent but Firefox times out on trying to connect.

I'm guessing you use Proton VPN?

Device-2: Intel Wireless 7265 driver: iwlwifi v: kernel port: efa0
bus ID: 02:00.0 chip ID: 8086:095a
IF: wlp2s0 state: up mac: <filter>
IF-ID-1: ipv6leakintrf0 state: unknown speed: N/A duplex: N/A
mac: <filter>

If so, see here:

Thank you very much Sleeper. Will Proton VPN work with Linux if properly disconnected or will it remain problematic, do you know?

I've never used it, so can't say for certain. I would assume though it should be ok once that problem is fixed. But, I could be wrong.

OK I'll find out soon enough and now I know the problem. Thanks again. I am just wondering why I can't seem to find an edit button to mark this solved?

Edit is the pencil icon on upper right of your first post here. Add [SOLVED] to the Subject line.

I answered my own question. I loaded proton vpn and lost my connection. I guess I will have to speak with them as it used to work fine. As for the pencil icon, that is what I meant, it is not there for some reason.

OK now I can see why I can't find the pencil icon, the issue is not "solved." After disconnecting proton vpn and having a few hours of connectivity, I lost it again. There was still excellent connectivity to wi-fi as indicated, but not to my browser. I was able to re-connect with a reset and a reboot. FYI, I believe I have attempted to do the same with a restart and it doesn't seem to work. I say "seem" because it is always hit and miss anyway.

Ok, I have no other ideas except perhaps:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service

That didn't do it but I have a question. I have Cinnamon 20 if I upgrade to Cinnamon 21 do you think that will take care of the issue?

Honestly, I don't know, plus you run the risk of more possible problems from the upgrade. If you decide to try it, take a Timeshift snapshot first.

Is your Firefox up to date? I got an update today to 107.0 if that helps any.

im@lcm720:~$ protonvpn-cli disconnect
Attempting to disconnect from Proton VPN.

No Proton VPN connection was found. Please connect first to a Proton VPN server.
jim@lcm720:~$

Actually, the restart network changed something. When I get my connection back it is lightening fast but over time the speed degenerates until I get timed out on attempting to connect. When you suggested trying that my connection time was sluggish but was again very fast after the network restart. Also, I have been able to re-connect just with a wi-fi restart and no reboot, if that is at all helpful.

I don't know enough about Proton VPN to suggest anything more. There are several threads here that might be helpful if you just enter proton or proton vpn in the search box.

I completely removed Proton VPN with synaptic manager and following a reboot the problem disappeared.
