Wifi capability vanished. Complains that cable unplugged

Post by jakesalomon »

Greetings.

I have been away from Linux since a previous computer died on me quite a while back. I now have a new HP laptop (for very big laps :) ) and just installed LinuxMint 21 (vanessa) today. Hence, I feel like a newbie at LinuxMint. Also, I tried searching on the above phrases. Too many results and what I did look at does not resemble my gluteal pain.

When I booted from the USB it was able to locate my routers (as well as my neighbor's router) and I was able to connect to the appropriate wifi setting and browse. After this installation I had to manually connect to that router again, once; in a few subsequent reboots I had no problem either. Suddenly, however, after a recent reboot, there is no wifi connection. When I click on the tiny network icon in the panel I see 3 options:
  • Wired Cable unplugged
  • Network Settings
  • Network Connections
Well, of course the cable is unplugged; I'm using Wifi

(As an aside, how do I get the bullet points to work between the list= and /list tags? I kludged the bullet list you see above.)

When I click on Network Settings I get a window (which I cannot paste here on another PC) that displays:
- Wired (with the Unplugged reminder)
- Network Proxy (which is pretty useless w/o a network connection)

For Network Connections I get
- Ethernet / Wired connection. And we know that's a flop.
- Wi-Fi / <name of my router> Now here, if I double-click, I see my router information, including my access password.

But in all that, there seems to be no way for me to actually connect to it. Nor do the other routers (like my FIOS and neighbor's) show up in any menu.

I rebooted Windows just to be sure and it connects just fine that way. So I know there's no new hardware issue on my brand new laptop.

So right now I am trapped in a completely local environment. I have a spare ethernet cable but that won't solve the problem, even if it connects me.

I'd love to get some solutions here.

Thanks much.

If you right-click the connection icon you will get another menu.
If you think the issue is solved, edit your original post and add the word solved to the title.

jakesalomon - please post your system details as stated in step 5 of how to get help link above surrounded in pink color ( almost impossible to miss -_- )

If you prefer the gui way

windows logo button on your keyboard, type system reports, click System information button upper left, click Copy button bottom right, come back here..paste your results

(( ( your results will already be surrounded in code tags to make it easier for everyone to skim read without it taking up much room. ))

The management of this site put that . . how to get help ..... link there specifically step 5 to save everyone time wasting guessing as most often..your system details ( in this case that tell us how your Linux distro .." see" and deal with your hardware ) usually help everyone narrow down the source of the problem. That's why it says

OK, Folks. I connected the ethernet cable so I could post screen shots, though I can't screen-shot the menu when I click the Network Manager Icon.
(BTW, I had the devil of a time locating my post. I will post a separate question on how to do that.)
The bottom line for me is that when I click on that icon I should see a list of every blessed WiFi device my PC can detect. Including my printer!

To clarify what I tried to describe yesterday:
1. I left-click Network Manager and get the three-item menu:
- Wired (Connected now)
- Network Setting
- Network Connections

2. I click Network Settings (no difference left or right click) and I get:
When I choose Network Settings
When I choose Network Settings
3. When I click on Network Connections I get:
When I click Network Settings
When I click Network Settings
4. When I double-click click on the Wi-Fi line above I get this useful gem:
When I double-click on the Wi-Fil line
When I double-click on the Wi-Fil line
5. On the other hand, if I right-click the Network Settings, as vimes666 suggests, I get a menu that includes "Configure", the only option I would date choose. Ah, but that yields:... Well, I can't attach more than 3 files but it looks like:
Menu
[Show menu ][Shift+Super+N | unassigned]
Not useful - I'm not interested in setting or changing the "hot key" for this.

As to motoryzen's suggestion that I paste the system information - YIKES!! But here is that system report. Talk about verbose!

I will post a separate question on how to do that
Well you can always left click hold on the web address up top ( probably at the far left edge of it) , and drag it to your bookmarks bar. I feel ya on that temp frustration. I had lost where I made a post asking for troubleshooting help on a sata ssd taking 35 to 50 freaking seconds to finally get recognized in LM 21.1 cinnamon until a night or two ago.

As to motoryzen's suggestion that I paste the system information - YIKES!! But here is that system report. Talk about verbose!

 Yes..I realize all that info can seem daunting or overwhelming. but Please know..it is your best friend to get used to checking it out. It never stays 100% the same so don't assume that you can copy and paste that exact instance of it from now on.

I made a tutorial on how to create a faster way to launch it, hightlight all the results and copy the info in one fell swoop ( or click if you turn it into a gui launcher button as I mentioned in the tutorial also here viewtopic.php?f=42&t=386621&p=2265479#p2265479 ... ... it honestly isn't for Linux noobs, but think of it like this. It's an interesting challenge that can open your mind up to being able to do more cool things and often..faster in the long run. It's worth it to try setting this up for future requests for help. )

Your system details don't stay 100% the same forever.

Feel welcome to pick my brain about other bashscripts and how to's. My thanks to all here to have helped me over the years as well as Joe Collins aka Ezeelinux, Chris Titus Tech, and many others I've temp forgotten.

I would not want to mess with anything in Windows and the startup seems blessedly fast anyway. As to disabling secure boot in the BIOS - When I tried to install Ventoy on the new PC, Acronis stopped it from disabling Secure Boot. Since I am uncertain (euphemism for "ignorant as a zucchini" :? ) of just what Secure Boot does, I will not try this. In any case, as I mentioned, under windows I see all the aforementioned Wi-Fi devices so it ain't gonna happen. Thanks, but your advice is not for noobs.

As to motoryzen's suggestion on how to get that blessed (notice how I use that adjective? ) report: I had not problem getting the report with your previous advice. The extra items might be helpful later. However, what I'd really like to see is a guide on how to read & interpret that (adjective waived this time 8) ) that report! I will pull that report into Notepad++ and see if I can make heads/tails of it. (Kinda skeptical.)

Thanks all for not ignoring my too-verbose posts.

Your choice, but either one of those could be the cause of your problems. That aside, see if there is a wifi driver you can install in Driver Manager.

Hi Folks again.

I just realized that I have been omitting a detail here:

This problem manifested after a few unsuccessful attempts in run tor-launcher. (Got it from the Package Manager.) It would start downloading Tor browser and get stuck. I kept aborting it and finally rebooted mid-stuck-download.

I gave up on Tor and uninstalled it and the launcher but the problem persists.

Jeremy, where do you come up with these exceedingly obscure utilities?

I'll do more than your suggestion but here are your outputs:

Code: Select all

$ mokutil --sb
SecureBoot enabled
No surprise there. Next:

Code: Select all

$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net
0000:01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter [10ec:c821]

HMM... The first item lists Wireless Network Adapter but I can't tell anything about it from this data.

Now I got curious about my MAC address - My ASUS router is configured for MAC filtering. Interesting result:

Code: Select all

$ ifconfig -a

        TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0
Note: The MAC address of the Ethernet connection is a red herring. The ifconfig output does NOT display the WiFi MAC address specified in my router. That would have shown up as HWDR or Physical Address. To repeat, it initially worked for a couple of days after I installed LinuxMint.

Now (as if this wasn't long enough) my Google searches indicate this is an awfully common problem with Linux Mint, a bug in Network Manager. One solution, which I found at https://linuxgui.com/how-to-fix-wifi-pr ... nux-mint/ suggests dumping Network Manager and replacing it with wicd, which I've never heard of. (And uninstalling Network Manager.) Anyone out there heard of wicd? Obviously, I'm reluctant to swap the devil I know for a one I don't. What would y'all do? And would I actually have to uninstall Network Manager or just remove it from the panel, dropping wicd in its place?

(Whew! :? )
Thanks all again. This is getting very educational and refreshing my memory.

I've never heard of wicd, but I'm not expert in Linux yet either.

Do a System image backup or drive clone or at least a Timeshift snapshot creation first before you try that.

Stupid phone sorry lol

Still think you need to disable secure boot, but try:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe rtl8821ce

Did the wifi work before installing rtl8821ce-dkms? Because right now the rtl8821ce-dkms driver can't be loaded because of Secure Boot and it likely added a blacklist to /etc/modprobe.d/ to keep the signed kernel module from being loaded automatically

Hey, man! This is a new laptop PC. Whatever hardware you see listed is what came with it. I'm SO flattered that you mistook me for someone capable in stalling hardware on a laptop. (Desktop units, yes. Cabinet minicomputers, yes. Laptops, no. )

OK so the secure-boot seems to be at the heart of this gluteal pain. Let's take some segues:
  1. What does Secure Boot do?
  2. What is my system vulnerable to if I disable Secure Boot?
  3. How does one disable and enable Secure Boot in Linux?
  4. Can this be done for Linux only or will it operate on my Windows boot at the same time?
Man! I am back in my old form: Opening cans of juicy, wriggling worms!

1. What does Secure Boot do? Just serves as a way, imo at least, for microsoft to limit what you can do with other OS worlds you choose to use that PC Involving ( same with Fast boot aka Quick start from within Windows settings)

2. What is my system vulnerable to if I disable Secure Boot? No more and no less than if you leave it enabled. I've seen plenty of examples from friends', family members' and my own systems testing this time and time again...Secure boot doesn't prevent your system from becoming infected with any form of digital infection be it viruses, malware, spyware ( which is what Windows has been since arguably xp first launched in fall 2001 btw. Patriot Act ;) )

3. How does one disable and enable Secure Boot in Linux? Linux doesn't deal with Secure boot in your traditional sense if that makes any sense. There is no enabling or disabling Secure boot or Fast boot or Quick Start or Quick boot within Linux. That's a microsoft windows thing.
4. Can this be done for Linux only or will it operate on my Windows boot at the same time?

I'm sorry but I don't understand that question. You simply press and hold upon powering on that laptop the correct Fkey or Del or whatever key you see on screen that talks about " whateverKey to enter setup" or something along those lines.

uefi, bios, and setup....Are the three most common pc motherboard manufacturer ( labeling) names they use for your to press that key to access your bios or uefi ..which is the main core settings at the heart of that PC..the motherboard's firmware settings menu.

I tried that modprobe. Another obscure command with an intimidating man page!

Code: Select all

$ sudo modprobe rtl8821ce
[sudo] password for jake:
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'rtl8821ce': Operation not permitted
Hey, I'm SUDOman! Who dares tell me "not permitted?"

The kernel and Grub are telling you that because rtl8821ce is not signed, you might have some luck with

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe rtw88_8821ce

motoryzen answere 3 of 4 of my noob questions regarding Secure Boot. Why was I asking about it? Because Jeremyb said:
right now the rtl8821ce-dkms driver can't be loaded because of Secure Boot and it likely added a blacklist to /etc/modprobe.d/ to keep the signed kernel module from being loaded automatically
:? :? :? :?
OK, in the modprobe man page there was some discussion about a blacklist. Let's have a peek in directory /etc/modprobe.d:

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d$ ls -lt
total 44
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 150 Jan 17 17:39 dkms.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   41 Jan 15 15:56 blacklist-oss.conf -> /lib/linux-sound-base/noOSS.modprobe.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 154 May 16 2022 intel-microcode-blacklist.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 154 Oct 7 2021 amd64-microcode-blacklist.conf
....
OK, what happened on Jan 15 in that blacklist-oss.conf? First few lines look like:

Code: Select all

blacklist ac97
blacklist ac97_codec
blacklist ac97_plugin_ad1980
blacklist ad1848
blacklist ad1889
blacklist adlib_card
blacklist aedsp16
blacklist ali5455rtl8821ce
...
However, vim finds no

Code: Select all

blacklist rtl8821ce
line in there. (Yes, I set ignore-case) In fact, even a

Code: Select all

grep -i rtl8821ce *.conf
fails to turn up any mention of rtl8821ce. (Did it complain about Big Brother? ) So as informative at that idea was (hey, I discovered such a thing a driver blacklist) we still have so solution to enabling my WiFi driver.

I believe a WiFi via USB device is available, though I don't know if it would work for Linux as a workaround. A partial surrender to an otherwise difficult-to-surmount problem. Just thinking (a terrible habit, a downright vice! :) )

This class is in recess only. It ain't over until solved! :)

Thank you all for your patience!

Try what JeremyB said:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe rtw88_8821ce
If not, I think you really need to disable secure boot.
