Repost [edit]: Bluetooth speaker not detected as output device in 'Sound' panel LM Cinnamon 21.1

Post by OneSkate »

I have two Bluetooth speakers that are detected and connected via blueman, but fail to show up as output options in the 'Sound' panel.
Bluetooth devices worked under LM Cinnamon 20, but since my recent clean install of LM Cinnamon 21.1 I've had this problem.

I've tried various tricks from various fora, most of them out of date. (Disable this, enable that, disable then re-enable the other)
I'm hopeful I've restored everything to status quo ante.

My android phone is able to connect and output audio signal to both devices.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

cheers - joe

Re: Repost [edit]: Bluetooth speaker not detected as output device in 'Sound' panel LM Cinnamon 21.1

Further developments! Progress!

I've discovered, purely by chance, that if I put my system to sleep then re-awaken and re-connect the bluetooth speaker it will show up as an output device in Sound app. Output profile is "High Fidelity Playback (A2DP Sink)". Audio plays normally.

I can dis- and re-connect bluetooth, and it still works.
I can dis- and re-enable bluetooth, and it still works.

I can log off and back on, and it still works.

However, computer restart reverts it to its former non-functioning state. I have to log off and back on to make it all go properly.

Is there a way to permanently fix this?

I've been looking around for solutions, or hints toward solutions, for a while now. Probably invested way more time in this than it merits, but the problem drives me nuts. Many people report the same issue, but none of the solutions both fit my situation and solve the problem.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

cheers - joe

The next time you do that, run the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | grep -i "blue"
Please also run the following when you start the computer and then again after you resume from suspend and reconnect the speaker. Let's see if there is a difference.

Code: Select all

sudo service bluetooth status

HI @SMG, here are the results of running the commands you asked for.
First, though, I'd like to correct some misleading info. I said logoff - logon would somehow enable the bt connection.
Actually, it was waking up from Suspend state (close-open laptop lid) that did it.
Logoff-logon tried just now yielded no good result.

Anyhow, results below.

Freshly booted, speaker not connected, no Suspend:

Checking the time stamps, you started the computer at 13:20:00. You resumed from suspend at 13:30:15 (or thereabouts). However, nothing in the grep "blue" output showed anything different, but the bluetooth status has new lines when compared to initial start-up

There were no bluez lines until after you suspended.

Here is the Linux Mint Documentation: Bluetooth, but nothing jumps out at me as something which might help in this situation.

Bluetooth issues are usually handled under networking so that might be a place to check for a situation similar to yours. I do not have bluetooth devices so my ability to help is limited. I don't know why bluetoothd is not registering your speakers as a source until after you suspend. There was nothing different in the outputs to indicate something changed on the computer systems side (at least I didn't notice anything different).

This does not seem to be a sound issue, but rather a bluetooth issue so I will move your topic to Networking.
