I have just setup Linux Mint Cinnamon on a desktop computer in my lab. The goal is to use datalad (a git & git-annex tool for large files) to manage my dataset on this particular system. For this I need internet connection and have the following dilemma:
Wifi works in principle, but it is very unstable on this system and I'm often without connection for tens of minutes, very inconvenient and would prevent me from getting and pushing data from/to remote. I don't know if software or hardware is to blame, but am happy to receive ideas. Note, same wifi networks work fine on my laptop without interruption.
Wired network is provided by the institute, which blocks many applications. For instance, I can download things from a website, but not in the terminal:
