Wifi not working after upgrade to Mint 21 [SOLVED]

Post by sydbat »

So I decided to upgrade one of my boxes from Mint Mate 20.3 to Mint Mate 21.1. All seemes to have gone smoothly except I have lost wifi altogether. The Linksys dongle is not even recognised in Network Manager. I had a similar issue a few months ago and was able to find the solution in my linked thread - viewtopic.php?f=52&t=384567. I have tried both suggested methods in that thread, and several others in the Mint forums and elsewhere. All no joy.

The results of

So the device is recognized by the system, but not the network interface, probably because there is no USB driver for it.

One of the "solutions" I came across said to run

Code: Select all

sudo dkms status
which gives

Are any of these the possible cause of the issue? As far as I can tell, there is no rtl88x2 or 8822bu installed, but they might be hiding somewhere and I have to remove them manually. Also, I have not run the 5.4 kernel for nearly a year, and had removed it completely when I installed the 5.15 kernel last spring/summer. Not sure why all those entries are still there.

Currently I am using an old phone of mine tethered via USB in order to access any type of internet, but it is less than desirable for speed. I need to get this working, as my other box also has wifi requirements, and I would like to upgrade that one too. I would prefer to just upgrade instead of clean install for...reasons.

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I think you need to remove the other drivers:

Code: Select all

sudo dkms remove 8822bu/1.1 --all

Code: Select all

sudo dkms remove backport-iwlwifi/9858 --all

Code: Select all

sudo dkms remove rtl8812au/5.13.6 --all
Reboot

I'm not sure if these also need to be removed, but if so, you might do that in Synaptic:

rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-132-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-135-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-136-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-137-generic, x86_64: installed

Thank you for the help thus far @sleeper12. Still no joy.

I ran the codes you posted, and they seemed to yield a removal of items. Rebooted. Still no wifi option in the network right click menu. And I cannot find the other ones in Synaptic.

The updated

Code: Select all

sudo dkms status
shows a lot less

Code: Select all

nvidia/525.78.01, 5.15.0-58-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.15.0-46-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.15.0-52-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.15.0-57-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.15.0-58-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-132-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-135-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-136-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1, 5.4.0-137-generic, x86_64: installed
And, as I mentioned, none of the rtl88x2bu can be found in Synaptic. So I am not sure where they are hiding. Probably artefacts from the upgrade, so a file should show up somewhere so I can remove it manually? I will also try to run the remove code with the remaining rtl88x2bu and see if that changes anything.

EDIT - Yes, that did remove the rest. Now to reboot and see what happens.

OK. Still no joy.

Code: Select all

sudo dkms status
shows the correct things now (I hope)

Code: Select all

nvidia/525.78.01, 5.15.0-58-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl8822bu-next/5.13.1~ppa, 5.15.0-58-generic, x86_64: installed
I still do not get the wifi enable option in the network manager drop down, which I should get when unplugging the tethered phone. Yes?

I am wondering if the driver I need might be the au version instead of the bu version. Some resources for this Linksys dongle says au, some others say bu. I don't remember how I got it working last time, most likely from the linked thread in my OP. But even by that time, I had done a number of things that I cannot remember, and that solution might have only been for Mint 20.3. ARRGGHH

Any other suggestions? I don't want to use the old phone to tether as the speeds are atrocious. And I have no option to get an ethernet cable to this box. I just hope the dongle itself, which worked perfectly until the upgrade reboot, didn't die some horrible death while still being seen by the system, but with no ability to grab the driver.

As an aside, what could be causing this disconnect? If my last point is right, then there we are. But if the dongle works otherwise...

Finally, if any solution requires me to go into Cinnamon, I can do that. Solutions should work across DE's.

So I removed every driver for the dongle I could think of, or that came up in dkms status. I then disabled the ppa that I had installed from some other thread (my head is starting to hurt). Then I tried

Code: Select all

ubuntu-drivers devices
which gave me

Code: Select all

== /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb2/2-3/2-3:1.0 ==
modalias : usb:v13B1p0045d0210dc00dsc00dp00icFFiscFFipFFin00
vendor : Linksys
driver : rtl8822bu-next-dkms - third-party free
along with my nvidia card drivers availability. So I thought 'why not install that listed driver'. But I get this

Code: Select all

rtl8822bu-next-dkms is already the newest version (5.13.1~jammy1)
Not sure why this says that the driver is already installed. And I cannot uninstall it because apt says it doesn't exist. AAAHHHH!!!

Does anything here help??

I would like to get this dongle to work again, but this is getting really frustrating. If I have to, I will find another dongle, but will I have the same problems? Thankfully (knock on wood) my laptop running Mint 21 works well with the builtin wifi, and I have no problems. But with this box, the usb dongle is there in lsusb, but not in iwconfig or nay other command for networking. I am going to have to look at this again on Monday.

Far as I know, you seem to have the correct driver. So, let's wait & see what JeremyB has in mind.

Alright. After removing every trace I could find of any driver related to wifi on the system, I began to try out several different PPA's and retry the morrow git drivers. One at a time. Install, reboot, uninstall. All no joy.

Then I was reading that possibly the 5.19 kernel might have a built in driver submitted by Realtek. This is worth a try. I will be installing the 5.19 kernel hopefully today and seeing if it will work. It is listed in the kernel part of Update Manager. If it does not work, I guess I will have to find a new dongle that is compatible.

I will update later when I have tried the newer kernel.

Re: Wifi not working after upgrade to Mint 21 [SOLVED]

Post by sydbat »

So I thought to myself, if the 6.0 kernel is available (as oem), why not install that. Things should work, right? Nope. Installed the morrow 88x2bu driver. Nope. Installed the other one (8812au). Nope. Decided to really closely read the "Read Me" file. It turns out that if you are not tired and your brain doesn't hurt from trying EVERYTHING, words make more sense. Who knew??

So, the morrow driver (88x2bu) only works with the 5.19 kernel or the 6.2 kernel. Since I tried the 6.0 kernel and got nothing, I was leery about any other kernel. But I installed the 5.19 kernel (as I should have in the first place) and....THE WIFI WORKS!!! I'M A SOMEBODY!!!

So thank you sleeper12 for your assistance. Believe it or not, your suggestions here, and in the other thread I linked to in my OP helped a lot. Made me think and do further research.

This is the git I am using - https://github.com/morrownr/88x2bu - this is the landing page that links to the most current version. The most recent update was last week. Some other gits ( :P ) or PPA's are often years out of date. And I tried them all. 5.19 kernel seems to be working with this driver, so until it isn't...

Well, it does get quite confusing at times. So, glad you were able to sort it all out.

No, it was actually better than you waited before trying the 5.19 kernel. The dkms updates needed for your wireless driver to compile properly on 5.19 were just released today. You would have had dkms failure errors had you tried earlier. You timed it perfectly. ;)

Wow. So the timing was all in the wrist then. Excellent.
