Wifi connected but internet not working

Post by karsh2244 »

Hello. This is my first time using Linux. My old laptop would take 5mins to boot windows so i decided to switch. However after installing, my internet stopped working. It is connected to my router but it won't load anything. I installed the updated using ethernet, followed a few tutorials to try to fix it but nothing seems to be working. Please help. (As this is my first time using linux i apologize for any obvious mistakes)

See if wifi works with power management off:

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

IT WORKED.... For a while. But then stopped working again. I tried to re enter the command and restart but no use. Actually I'm not even sure it started working because of power manager settings. Cause even before it works for a while and randomly stops after sometime. :(

Leave power management off anyway as it can cause wifi issues. Then, try:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r rt2800pci && sudo modprobe rt2800pci && systemctl restart NetworkManager

Nope. Still not working. Could it be because of my wifi chip. I think i read somewhere that older wifi chips are not supported?

Just a guess, but maybe you need a lower kernel. You could try a live session of Mint 20.3 with the 5.4 kernel & see if wifi works there.

Ah I see. For now I have settled for a heavily debloated Windows. I'll try the downgraded mint in the future. Thank you so much for the help.

If you dual boot with Windows on that machine, you might need to disable fast startup in Windows.

I am experiencing the exact same same problem. My wireless connection shows it is connected but the browser is stuck permanently on the first page it brings up. My only way around this was inserting a usb wi-fi dongle which surfs normally. These problems only started when I upgraded from a copper connection to full fibre
